Following enthusiastic dealer response, Volkswagen has committed to the production of the new T-Roc compact crossover. Based on a concept shown in 2014 (pictured), the name of the new T-Roc sheds light on its inspiration. The "T" comes from the Tiguan while "Roc" refers to the fact that this small crossover doesn’t “shy away from rocky off-road trails,” according to Volkswagen.

Built on the same platform as the Golf, the concept T-Roc was equipped with a 2-liter turbo diesel capable of 182 horsepower. It was paired with a seven-speed automatic and all-wheel drive. The production version 2-door T-Roc will more likely have a turbocharged 1.8-liter four-cylinder offered in the U.S. The concept version also featured a removable roof that could be stored in the rear. We’re hoping that’s a feature that stays.

Described by Volkswagen as another big milestone for the brand, the T-Roc’s production site has yet to be announced but will most likely be produced at Volkswagen’s Chattanooga plant.

The T-Roc will make its debut in Europe in August of this year and in the U.S. in 2019. In the meantime, Volkswagen will have the 2017 Tiguan and the upcoming longer-wheelbase 2018 Tiguan (which could potentially be sold alongside each other). In addition to the Tiguan, the all-new Volkswagen Atlas has just arrived, offering plenty of choices for SUV shoppers.
