It's safe to say that the wheel has been around for a while. So when Porsche was considering wheel options for its limited edition 911 Turbo S Exclusive Series, the automaker wanted something new, something technologically advanced, something worthy of the Porsche name. It finally decided on wheels made of carbon fiber, and the finished product is not only beautiful, but the process of making them is enchanting all on its own.
Watch the video below and you'll see what we mean.
Lightweight + incredibly strong = outstanding performance
Besides their visual appeal, carbon fiber wheels offer a number of advantages over traditional metal alloy ones. They're much lighter for one thing (around 20 percent lighter, to be specific), which translates to lower unsprung mass (a figure that corresponds with improved handling). Carbon fiber wheels are also incredibly strong, thanks to the 11 miles' worth of material that goes into the base of the rim, not to mention the 200+ parts that make up the wheel. All in all, the process results in a wheel that's denser and more rigid, all of which makes for an improved drive.
Not your average wheel
Another feature to keep in mind when considering these carbon fiber wheels: they're extremely exclusive. They're only available as an option on the Turbo S Exclusive Series, which is aptly named—the automaker is only making 500 of the models. The wheels themselves cost an additional $18,000 (practically a no-brainer when you consider the model's $257,500 price tag),* but bragging rights alone would make them worth the purchase.
