With Wi-Fi and Bluetooth® connectivity rapidly becoming more and more common in today's cars, it only makes sense that next-gen auto connectivity is kicking into gear. Toyota recently announced its next-generation connected vehicle framework at CES 2016 in Las Vegas.
The Next Level of Connectivity
We all love to be connected to other humans via our smartphones and mobile devices, so it makes sense that we want our cars to be connected, too. Right now, Toyota’s Entune® infotainment system is one of the company's most sophisticated connected vehicle frameworks.
Toyota's Data Communications Modules
By 2017, Toyota will offer an Entune® upgrade to owners of all U.S. vehicles equipped with Toyota’s Data Communications Modules (DCM). These vehicles will have an always-on connection to cellular telecommunications networks and will transmit data for services. They also offer the important feature of alerting emergency services if the airbag in the car is deployed, which means emergency personnel can respond and get to the scene much more quickly.
Gearing Up for the Future of Connectivity
It’s great that Toyota has announced plans to install always-on 4G LTE technology in broad range of vehicles by next year. We’re not sure exactly what cellular standard Toyota is planning to use, but more information should be released in the months to come.
Toyota is looking toward developing a globally uniform DCM that will standardize the architecture across regions and countries by 2019. The hope is that it will cut development costs and streamline manufacturing processes and adoption, which will ultimately benefit the customer.
Pioneers in Automotive Technology
Toyota has always been on the forefront of new technology and design, and this announcement proves that it's doing all it can to give customers the best possible vehicles. In addition, Toyota strives to keep prices low so that consumers can take advantage of added features that ensure that their cars operate safely and efficiently. “Carmakers can continue to offer additional value by proactively using rapidly evolving IT technologies," said Shigeki Tomoyama, Senior Managing Officer of Toyota Motor Corporation. "In particular, we want to provide our customers with a safe, secure and convenient future mobility life."
