Adventurous motorists everywhere have something exciting in store. At the 2016 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS), which was held in Detroit in January, the Volkswagen Tiguan GTE Active Concept debuted. It's a sport utility vehicle (SUV) that's set to change the definition of "SUV."

Finally, a Hybrid That's Really Powerful

This all-wheel drive vehicle has a gas engine that can generate 148 horsepower, 184 pound-feet of torque, and don't forget about its two reliable electric motors as well.

The fuel tank can hold 16.9 gallons, and the battery's limit is 12.4 kWh. Especially helpful, the front electric motor can provide power to the rear electric motor whenever the latter needs some juice.

Speaking of saving energy, the Tiguan GTE lets you travel as far as 20 miles and as fast as 70 mph without releasing emissions. And there's a system of regenerative braking, whereby the brakes yield energy which goes into the battery when the driver's foot comes off the pedals.

Even when it's not using gas, this SUV can handle off-road situations with ease. Indeed, when you're operating the Tiguan GTE, you can choose among front-wheel, rear-wheel, and all-wheel drive. Some motorists might never think about hybrid power the same way again.

Spiffy Exterior, Elegant Interior

The Tiguan GTE just looks great. It features:

  • A height of 69.5 inches
  • An elongated wheelbase
  • A skid plate on the front
  • An aluminum shield
  • A bumper with graphite trim
  • A black roof with two spotlights
  • LED headlights

Inside, you might find the steering wheel with chrome highlights and the decorative leather seating to be particularly appealing. Plus, there's a 9.2-inch touchscreen for information and entertainment, which you can control with hand movements.

Protecting Drivers and Passengers

The Tiguan GTE comes with a series of safety features. Indeed, it's comforting to know that your SUV has:

  • An automatic emergency braking system, one that watches for pedestrians.
  • Lane Assist®, which lets you know when you're drifting out of your lane.
  • The Automatic Post-Collision Braking System®, a program that can make crashes less severe.

Volkswagen has yet to confirm whether the Tiguan GTE Concept will make it to production, but we’re sure hoping it does. Until then, be sure to contact or stop by 3Birds Template to explore our current lineup of vehicles.
