Some hydrogen fuel cell haters like to call the Toyota Mirai names. Some people say that the Mirai is “bullsh*t.” And Toyota has released a video to tell all of the haters, “You’re right.”
Well, kind of.
The video proves that when people call hydrogen fuel cell technology “bullsh*t,” they’re technically right. That’s because when Toyota says the Mirai runs on hydrogen from anywhere – they mean it. Even if it means the hydrogen comes from cow poop.
As the first part of Toyota’s online video series “Fueled by Everything,” the video (aptly named “Fueled by Bullsh*t”) was directed by award-winning documentary filmmaker Morgan Spurlock, and it stinks – but only literally. The video features a mechanical engineer and a dairy farmer following a load of cow manure as it’s processed into fuel for the hydrogen fuel cell electric Toyota Mirai.
All poop jokes aside, the possibilities displayed by this video are big news for the future. Beyond manure, hydrogen is found in a multitude of other renewable energy sources, like solar, wind, and biogas from landfills. Researching and developing these production methods could result in locally sourced, clean fuel, since the Mirai emits only water vapor from its tailpipe.
“Witnessing manure, something most of us view as being pretty disposable, being transformed into hydrogen fuel to power a car was pretty remarkable,” Spurlock commented. “I think this short film is pretty compelling evidence of what could be possible in the years ahead.”
