Love your MINI but long for something a little more versatile? It looks like your prayers may be answered, as the fun-loving automaker may be contemplating a premium compact sedan, reports Automotive News (subscription required).

According to BMW AG board member Peter Schwarzenbauer, a MINI sedan could be on the horizon. “It is a question you have to look at economically, and around the world you could say the sedan has the biggest potential, volumewise."

What exact form a MINI sedan would take remains to be seen, but it’s a good bet such a car would retain the fun styling and handling elements that have made the entire MINI lineup such a success with drivers.

Interestingly, the proposed sedan isn’t the only new model MINI is contemplating. According to Schwarzenbauer, a car based on the stunning Superleggera electric roadster (pictured) is also on the table as a halo vehicle for the brand.

But while a business case can be made for a large volume sedan, that statement is less true for a Halo car like the Superleggera. The volume would undoubtedly be lower while the cost would be considerably higher than anything in MINIs current lineup.

"Economically it is easier to put a sedan on paper than a great halo car," Schwarzenbauer said. "We have to look at all the options.”

MINI, however, is no stranger to introducing new models and refining existing ones. In addition to the recently redesigned MINI Convertible, the redesigned Clubman, which went on sale in January, grew roughly 12 inches in length and 4.6 inches in width and is the brand’s first foray into the compact segment.

Also joining the MINI family is a redesigned Countryman, which is scheduled to debut this year and go on sale in 2017. A plug-in hybrid is also expected in the next two years, while an electric car is in the planning phase.
