The Cadillac brand is growing, thanks to the recent additions of the CT6 sedan and XT5 crossover. And if recent reports are to be believed, it appears that trend will continue. According to Road & Track--by way of Cadillac executive chief engineer Dave Leone at the 2016 Detroit Auto Show--Cadillac is looking to bolster its lineup by introducing a new sports sedan. The as-yet-to-be-named model would slot beneath the popular ATS.

According to Leone, the model would serve as the entry point to the Cadillac lineup, and would compete directly with similar entry-level luxury and performance models like the Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class, Acura ILX, and Audi S3. However, in true Cadillac fashion, the sub-ATS model would feature one key upgrade over its rivals—a rear-wheel drive configuration, something the front-wheel drive CLA, ILX, and S3 can't match.

Other interesting tidbits regarding the new model point to its sharing of Cadillac’s versatile Alpha platform, which is already in use by both the ATS and CTS sedans.

It’s important to remember that nothing has been confirmed at this point, but if Cadillac’s recent expansion of vehicles is anything to go off, it’s not outside the realm of possibility to think the brand would want to – and is capable of – competing against other entry-level sport sedans.

Should plans for this new model come to fruition, you can be sure we’ll be ready to share any further details, including in-vehicle technologies, design, and available engines.
