What shrinks as it grows larger? No, it’s not some crazy riddle--it’s the MINI lineup if the latest rumors hold any truth.
We’re talking, of course, about the MINI Rocketman (pictured), a concept car that debuted in 2011 and that measures a mere 3.2 meters (about 10 feet) long.
At the time of the Rocketman’s debut, MINI wouldn't confirm if the concept was bound for production. While the idea of micro MINI was well-liked, the lack of an available platform and the challenge of engineering such a compact model meant it was never built.
But like a zombie rising from the ground in post-apocalyptic Atlanta (wink), the Rocketman may live on after all. According to MINI product chief Ralph Mahler (via Autocar), MINI is currently considering whether or not a car like the Rocketman “can be a possibility or not.”
That’s not exactly confirmation, per se, but Mahler is quoted as saying that MINI had “nothing against” making a smaller car like the Rocketman in the future.
Interestingly, the rise in popularity of electric vehicles may provide the spark (pun thoroughly intended) the Rocketman needs for liftoff, with Mahler hinting at a production Rocketman that utilizes an electrified powertrain.
“The Rocketman is inspiring us as of today, especially as an EV in the future,” he said.
Autocar posits that MINI, for the Rocketman, would likely tap into the electric technology of BMW’s i brand, with engineers also borrowing some space-saving tricks--like the i3’s innovative use of running gear built into the floor--in order to free up cabin space.
Another option would be to extend BMW’s partnership with Toyota and tap into the Japanese automaker’s small car expertise.
Whether the Rocketman makes the transition from concept to reality remains to be seen, but you can be sure we’ll be watching this story as it develops.
