New for 2016
The Abarth gains Chrysler’s award-winning Uconnect® infotainment suite, which combines an integrated CD player with Bluetooth® phone support and navigation. The new system is a welcome replacement to the previous model’s dash-mounted TomTom system. The 2016 Abarth also gains a number of new paint colors: Celeste Blue (light blue), Rhino (dark gray), Grigio Cenre (light gray) and Giallo Moderna Perla (Modern Pearl Yellow).
A Taste of Italy
Forget about a prancing horse or a raging bull, the 2016 FIAT 500 Abarth is the most authentic representation of Italian automotive design available in the U.S. Based on the popular and charming Fiat 500, the Abarth is a performance-focused version that cranks up the regular 500’s intensity levels and adds a real sense of pleasure to your daily commutes. If you want a vehicle that will leave you grinning from ear to ear every time you get behind the wheel, the 2016 FIAT 500 Abarth may be the car you were destined to drive.
Powertrains and Performance
The 2016 FIAT 500 Abarth proves that you don’t need a monstrous V8 (or V6 for that matter) to deliver a unique and exhilarating driving experience. Case in point: the Abarth’s rambunctious 1.4-liter turbocharged engine. Serving up 160 horsepower and 170 pound-feet of torque, the 2016 Abarth packs a real wallop out on the road.
For your convenience, the Abarth is available with one of two different transmission options. A five-speed manual is standard, and gives you added control of your performance while driving, while a heavy-duty six-speed automatic transmission is available for drivers that would rather relinquish shifting duties to the vehicle. (It’s important to note that selecting the six-speed automatic changes the Abarth’s engine output ever so slightly to 157 hp and 183 lb-ft of torque.)
Despite its desire for outright performance, the Abarth smartly manages power and efficiency. Fuel economy numbers are impressive, to say the least, with manual-equipped models earning an EPA-estimated 30 mpg combined (28 city/34 highway),* and models with the automatic earning 27 mpg combined (24 city/32 highway).*
Features and Trims
For a subcompact, performance-oriented car, the FIAT 500 Abarth is incredibly versatile and designed to fit a wide range of driving needs. It is available in hatchback or convertible form. Pricing starts at $22,575.**
16-inch performance aluminum wheels, performance suspension, and bifunctional halogen projector headlamps. Adding to the Abarth’s sporty character are single piston front and rear red brake calipers. Abarth models also feature distinctive exterior and interior styling tweaks. Meanwhile, the Abarth convertible benefits from standard rear parking sensors and an optional windscreen that fits behind the rear seats.
As previously mentioned, the Abarth’s old TomTom dash-mounted navigation system has been replaced with Uconnect®, which smartly integrates phone and stereo features in one convenient and easy-to-use interface.
The FIAT 500 Abarth is one of the most stylish cars available, but in true Italian fashion, Abarth models can be customized further to truly showcase its owner’s unique character. These additions aren’t just for show, either. Packages like the Comfort and Convenience package (automatic climate control, heated seats and satellite radio) and a Beats Audio package (satellite radio and the BeatsAudio™ sound system) really add an extra layer of refinement to this sporty subcompact. Standalone options include a sunroof, leather upholstery, and rear parking sensors (hatchback only).
Design
No matter which angle you view the 2016 FIAT 500 Abarth from, you know this car is different from anything else. In fact, the FIAT 500 is easily one of the most distinctive designs in recent history, and the Abarth version is even more engaging.
Featuring unique body panels nearly everywhere you look, the Abarth is simply more aggressive no matter how you cut it. From the front, a unique bumper directs airflow to the intercoolers that route air from the turbocharger. The design is mimicked on the rear bumper, with dual exhaust tips peeking out underneath an aerodynamic diffuser.
Inside, that same personality reminds driver and passengers this is no normal FIAT. The seating position provided by the unique high-performance bucket seats provide a commanding view, while the design itself lends well to keeping drivers supported during spirited maneuvers. A dash-mounted boost gauge is a fun way to keep track of what your Abarth’s turbo is doing, and once again serves to remind you of the pocket supercar you’re in command of.
Safety
Despite its fun-loving nature, the 2016 FIAT 500 provides a stellar standard of safety. Fun may be its primary focus but that doesn’t mean safety takes a back seat. Standard safety features include stability and traction control, antilock disc brakes, hill start assist, a driver knee airbag, front side airbags, side curtain airbags and active front head restraints.
Bottom Line
Despite its diminutive stature, the 2016 FIAT 500 Abarth can’t help but leave a big impression. It’s small, affordable, and incredibly fun to drive. The 2016 FIAT Abarth is a new breed of subcompact car; one that delivers miles and miles of entertainment. Its energetic yet efficient engine punches well above its weight, while its sharp handling whimsical styling, and signature Italian personality help distinguish from everything else.
