The 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo celebrate the peak of human excellence and the incredible rewards that come with passionate dedication to a goal. In other words, they’re a perfect fit for the debut of the first Lexus LS fuel-cell variant.

Automotive News reports that this will be just one of eight vehicles inspired by “modern mobility” that games sponsor Tokyo Motor Corp. will be launching in conjunction with the event. Not only that, but we may already know the basis for the new Lexus model’s alternative fuel powertrain: the hydrogen fuel cell technology recently seen in the all-new Toyota Mirai.

The 2020 Olympics will be a "mental and philosophical milestone" for Toyota Motor Co. – Toyota spokesperson

It’s not surprising to see Toyota innovations crossing product portfolios, but we’re excited to see how Lexus would utilize this fascinating new technology. The Toyota Mirai is rated as a California Zero Emissions Vehicle thanks to its futuristic powertrain, which takes just five minutes to fill and delivers 153 horsepower.

We would expect to see that power substantially increase in the Lexus LS version. In contrast, the LS 600h hybrid offers 438 total system horsepower thanks to a 5-liter V8 engine and high-output electric-drive motor.*

Toyota hasn’t made an official announcement regarding its future hydrogen fuel cell plans, but at 3Birds Template, one thing is clear: Lexus isn’t playing games when it comes to pushing luxury forward.

*Ratings achieved using the required premium unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of 91 or higher. If premium fuel is not used, performance will decrease.
