Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) is the in-house tuner for Jaguar Land Rover, having previously developed the high-performance Range Rover Sport SVR. Now SVO is looking to build the ultimate off-road vehicles bearing the new “SVX” badge, and the latest reports suggest that the first one is likely to be based on the all-new Land Rover Discovery.
John Edwards, Managing Director of Jaguar Land Rover Special Vehicle Operations, spoke with Auto Express about the idea behind an SVO-enhanced Discovery at the 2017 Geneva Auto Show. He said that such a vehicle would be positioned somewhere between a Camel Trophy off-road adventurer and a Dakar rally off-road racer, also comparing it to what Ford did with its original F-150 Raptor.
While Edwards did not provide any details about what enhancements such a Discovery might feature, he has in the past talked about upgrades like off-roading wheel-and-tire combinations and a taller ride height. He’s also mentioned some next-generation off-roading technology similar to that of the 2015 Land Rover Discovery Vision concept vehicle, including road-scanning lasers, an off-road self-driving mode, and a transparent hood that allows the driver to scout wheel positions.
The SVO Discovery has not been officially announced, and there’s no word yet on when we can expect to hear more. We do know, however, that SVO plans to launch a new halo product every year from now through at least 2020 according to Edwards.
