Toyota just redefined the phrase “ready for anything” with the debut of the 2016 Tacoma at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit. The Tacoma has laid claim to the title of best-selling mid-size pickup in America for ten years running, with a hard-earned reputation for conquering any terrain its grisly tires may face – on or off road. And it’s getting even better.
The 2016 Tacoma is rebuilt from the inside out, with an all-new engine, enhanced suspension tuning, and premium upgrades to both the body and interior. The body frame strengthened by high strength steel is more rigid and stronger overall, and ultra-high strength steel was integrated into its shell with a new hot stamping process to reduce weight.
A high-power exterior is all the better to house a high-power engine. The new Tacoma gets a 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine or a segment-first 3.5-liter Atkinson cycle V6 armed with Toyota’s D-4S technology that features both direct and port fuel injection.
A six-speed automatic transmission with electronic shift pairs with both engines, and the V6 can also buddy up with a six-speed manual transmission. What’s the result of all these upgrades? More power, and less fuel consumption.
The new Tacoma’s power under the hood fuels its muscular and agile spirit enhanced by features like new wheel designs, new wheel flares, new locking tailgate with integrated spoiler for improved aerodynamics, and available tri-fold hard tonneau cover.
Outside, the Tacoma takes no prisoners, but available interior features like Qi wireless charging, leather-trimmed seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, and power moonroof keep adventurers comfortable behind the wheel. Features like a multi-layer acoustic windshield and floor silencer pad work to reduce road noise and make the new Tacoma quieter than ever before, but it doesn’t stop there. A laundry list of additional off-road technology and specifications is available for the true thrill seekers.
The 2016 Tacoma will be available in 5 grades in 4x2 and 4x4 configurations: SR, SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, and Limited. Sales of the new Tacoma are expected start fall of this year.
