If you're not familiar with it already, Nissan's Intelligent Mobility is the automaker's road map to achieving zero emissions and zero fatalities on the road, and the team at 3Birds Template is proud to say the brand has taken one step closer to that goal with its recent announcement that Nissan ProPILOT Assist™ will launch in the U.S. later this year.
Here's what we find so exciting about ProPILOT Assist™ technology.
A little bit of background
Nissan has been working on semi-autonomous and fully autonomous driving technology for a while now, and the upcoming U.S. launch is the result of 50,000 miles of development on American roads. While Nissan plans for its ProPILOT technology to assist drivers with multi-lane highways in 2018 and urban roads and intersections by 2020, this year's launch is designed to make stop-and-go traffic much easier to endure.
How ProPILOT Assist™ works
Considered a "hands-on driving assistance feature" as opposed to a self-driving one, ProPILOT Assist™ will still require a driver to place both hands on the wheel. But where this system shines is in removing the need for a number of minor adjustments drivers might not even realize they need to make while in stop-and-go traffic.
Taking advantage of a forward-facing camera, forward-facing radar, sensors, and an electronic control module, a Nissan equipped with ProPILOT Assist™ will handle centering the vehicle in the lane and maintaining a set speed (or distance from the preceding vehicle, if that vehicle slows down).
The system is aptly named—the driver will still need to remain in control of the vehicle, but Nissan sees ProPILOT Assist™ as a way to smooth the wrinkles out of what would otherwise be an unpleasant driving experience.
While the team at 3Birds Template is excited for Nissan to roll out its other technological advancements, we still have a little while to wait until they're ready.
