For years, fans of the Lexus LFA (and let’s be honest, who isn’t?) have eagerly latched on to the slightest details of the automaker’s next supercar. Now, though, we may have something a little more concrete to whet our appetites. Australia’s Motoring reports that Lexus is collaborating with BMW on a new halo vehicle that will once again change the way drivers think of unbridled luxury vehicles.
A true hybrid approach
If the reports are true, the design team isn’t the only hybrid element of the new LFA successor. Sources say that the vehicle is based on “a mid-engined aluminum space frame and carbon fiber platform” powered by a hybrid powertrain. In the Lexus model, this would take the form of a 3.7-liter V8 engine paired with two electric motors—BMW’s model would feature a BMW straight-six.
However, Toyota is reportedly providing the basis for the electric powertrain in both models: specifically, the design found in the Toyota TS040 Le Mans race car. Motoring’s source reveals, “[While] 1,000 horsepower is possible, fuel consumption, emissions concerns and engine tolerance figures will see a more realistic figure of 800 horsepower targeted.”
On track for a winning debut
Lexus hasn’t been quiet on the performance front since the LFA’s final model year in 2012. The thrilling RC-F boasts a hearty V8, and a production model of the LC Coupe is supposedly on the way. But the fact remains that an LFA successor would fill a much-needed gap for drivers looking for something more.
If the source is accurate, such a vehicle would debut in time for the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2020. We can’t think of a better way to celebrate two great brands coming together as one.
