Land Rover is deeply committed to safety, which is why the luxury British automaker recently announced that it is developing a see-through trailer concept said to completely remove the blind spot created when towing a trailer. By removing this large blind spot, Land Rover’s technology allows drivers to see vehicles as well as improve driver confidence and maneuverability while towing.
The prototype “Transparent Trailer” system works by combining a series of cameras placed around the vehicle and a digital wireless camera placed on the rear of the trailer. These video feeds are then combined to create the live video feed that makes the trailer appear see-through. So instead of your vision being obstructed by a large trailer, you would see just what is behind the trailer instead.
Land Rover researchers say they want to make towing safer and less stressful, and are hoping to solve the issue of vision obstruction by towing trailers or caravans, giving drivers the right information to make safe and effective decisions regardless of trailer size.
The “Transparent Trailer” technology would also make reversing easier, too. Drivers would be able to view the camera feed from the back of the trailer or caravan through the vehicle’s infotainment screen—complete with guidance lines to help reverse both the car and trailer.
But those aren’t the only problems Land Rover is looking to tackle. It’s also developing a cargo monitoring system that would allow easier monitoring of what’s inside a trailer, alerting the driver to an issue with cargo, a horse, etc.
Live video would once again pipe through to the vehicles infotainment system, and passengers would be able to view this footage live and in real-time. The system would even allow you to check your cargo and load remotely, and alert you via text message if any live cargo, such as a horse or a pet, was in distress.
Land Rover’s “Transparent Trailer” technology is currently in development, and there is no word on when we will see it in production vehicles.
