Jaguar Land Rover has filed at least 29 trademarks since March 13 as reported in Car and Driver. Of course, filing a trademark is no assurance that we’ll ever see that nameplate in our showroom. Still, it’s fun to consider the possibilities, as Jaguar has just recently laid claim to several new names. Some will sound familiar and some are completely new.

Sedan or SUV? Gas-powered or electric?

Many of the newly trademarked names give clues as to what type of vehicle they could belong to. For example, there’s the P-TYPE, T-TYPE, XJS, C-XE, iXE, diXE, XEdi, XEi, CXF, and CXJ. Will the P-TYPE and T-TYPE be monikers for new sports cars like the Jaguar D-TYPE and F-TYPE? Or will they follow the path of the S-TYPE sedan? It’s anyone’s guess.

Similarly, is the XJS slated to be another grand tourer like it was when it was introduced in the 70s? And what about these mysterious C names? They might connote sports car hybrids, like the recent C-X16 and C-X75. On the other hand, C also could just as likely stand for coupe. The i and di could be signaling electric or diesel electric. Consider the new I-PACE EV (pictured above), already in the works from Jaguar.

I-PACE EV coming in 2018

It’s more than a name and beyond a concept. The Jaguar I-PACE EV is becoming a reality and will arrive in our showroom next year. With five seats, 400 hp, and all-wheel drive, the I-PACE EV ”tears up the rulebook on vehicle layout” according to Jaguar.

“This isn’t just a concept,” said Ian Callum, Jaguar Director of Design in advance of last year’s Los Angeles Auto Show. “It is a preview of a five-seat production car that will be on the road in 2018.”

There’s still some time to wait—the new Jaguar I-PACE EV is slated to arrive at 3Birds Template in the second half of 2018. In the meantime, we’ll bring you more information on the automaker's future product plans as this story develops.
