Although many automakers are turning their back on traditional diesel models and are instead turning to fully electric vehicles. Jaguar Land Rover remains committed to using diesel models as stepping stones to the pure electric future.

In the words of Ralf Speth

"The latest diesel technology is really such a step in emissions, performance, particulates," Jaguar Land Rover CEO Ralf Speth told Autocar. "It’s better for the environment when compared to [an equivalent] petrol. Diesel has to—needs to—have a future.”

Speth says that Jaguar Land Rover will devote more effort promoting modern diesel technology, citing, among other factors, diesel's widespread use in commercial vehicles. Speth also points out that there are differences in old and new diesel technology; namely, new diesel vehicles have become much cleaner.

Speth also acknowledges that an electric takeover in the relatively near future is inevitable, but notes that the key to reducing emissions levels lies with improved diesel technology.

The 2017 Land Rover Range Rover Sport (pictured) is the first full-size Land Rover SUV available with a four-cylinder diesel engine. Delivering 254 horsepower and 443 lb-ft of torque, the 3.0 liter Td6 diesel is also optimized for impressive fuel economy with an EPA-rated 25 mpg combined.*
