There's something uniquely stressful about highway traffic, isn't there? Sitting there, not moving, when you just want to get wherever it is you're going. It is just as much a strain on the mind as it is on the muscles, and it's a stress that most of us have experienced before, one that too many of us are forced to endure on a daily basis. But the engineers at Nissan have come up with a solution for our traffic woes: a single-lane autonomous driving technology called ProPILOT. 3Birds Template has the details.
Specifically, ProPILOT works as a form of advanced cruise control. Sensors in the Nissan allow it to tell how close it is to the vehicle in front of it and then automatically maintain a set distance behind that vehicle at a set speed between ~19 and 62 mph. The system will apply the brakes if necessary (such as when the car in front of it has stopped), and all the driver has to do is press a switch or the accelerator to get moving again. It even keeps the vehicle centered in its lane.
For even more information about the system, see Nissan's handy infographic below:
Currently, the ProPILOT single-lane autonomous driving technology is only available in Japan on the Nissan Serena. But the automaker is nothing if not forward-thinking--multiple-lane and even intersection-capable autonomous driving technology is coming to the Nissan brand by 2020, and we can't wait until it comes to our dealership. In the meantime, we invite you to learn more about our current, technologically advanced models. Call, contact us online, or visit us in person at 505 W.
