The project

Enter the inner workings of “Project Black S,” INFINITI’s supercool, innovative development project. It’s INFINITI’s exploration of how a performance hybrid powertrain could strengthen the INFINITI Q60’s performance and dynamics. Basically, the project is all about how an already amazing brand can build something even better.

The team

The company had previously enlisted the counsel and services of Renault Sport Formula One Team to develop the powertrain. But very recently, INFINITI invited Pirelli, the Official Formula One tire supplier, into the collaboration. Tommaso Volpe, director of INFINITI Global Motorsport, and Paul Hembery, motorsport director for Pirelli, made the announcement at the Canadian Grand Prix.

Pirelli will create bespoke, P Zero tires exclusively for the Black S. As in Formula One, these tires will have colored markings on the sidewalls. Hembery elaborated on why Pirelli felt compelled to contribute to the project: “‘Project Black S' is the ultimate expression of innovation and cutting-edge technology transfer, which is in our DNA, so we couldn't let this opportunity go by. We are thrilled to be a part of it and to support INFINITI on this project.”

Pirelli’s interest indicates the general interest in the groundbreaking work INFINITI is doing and will only benefit the project going forward. “As we explore the feasibility of ‘Project Black S,’ Pirelli's input and knowledge—both motorsport and automotive—will be invaluable," said Volpe. "We couldn't be happier to have them onboard.”
