As a maker of premium and luxury vehicles, Volvo is constantly exploring innovative ways to make technology a central part of not only its vehicles, but the car-buying process in general. To achieve this goal, Volvo announced that it will team with Microsoft to jointly develop next generation automotive technologies.
What to Expect
What type of technologies can we expect? Well, it looks like Volvo will seek to leverage Microsoft HoloLens, an advanced, untethered computer that allows for augmented reality applications.
Augmented Reality (AR) is similar to Virtual Reality (VR). But while VR typically uses a headset and screen setup to display 2D and 3D images to a user, AR, which also utilizes a “wearable computer” has the ability to project 3D images in real time and space. Think Star Trek’s “holodeck’ and you’re right not too far off.
With the power of HoloLens and AR, Volvo is looking to redefine how customers first encounter and explore a car. Imagine going into a showroom and using HoloLens to explore a vehicle that isn’t even there. Not only would this save space, but it would allow customers to research numerous models and configurations that may not be present on the lot.
At a recent demonstration at Microsoft’s global headquarters in Redmond, Washington, Senior Vice President, Marketing, Sales and Service at Volvo Cars Björn Annwall has this to say. “HoloLens offers the freedom to create a bespoke experience which customers can steer themselves. Imagine using mixed reality to choose the type of car you want – to explore the colors, rims, or get a better understanding of the features, services and options available.”
Future Applications
Other areas of future collaboration between Microsoft and Volvo could include autonomous driving technologies, of which Volvo is a pioneer in car safety and is leading the way when it comes to connected cars.
Last year, Volvo announced its Drive-ME program, in which 100 self-driving and connected cars will be given to real customers on real roads around the Swedish city of Gothenburg by 2017. Volvo’s Drive-Me program is the world’s largest autonomous driving experiment, and reinforces the brand’s position as a leader in autonomous driving technologies.
At 3Birds Template, we understand that technology will not only enrich the car-buying experience, but make driving safer for all.
While it may be some time before these advanced applications become mainstream, we’re proud to offer some of the safest, most advanced vehicles on the road today. Contact or stop by our dealership and explore our large selection new and pre-owned Volvo models.
