Off-road enthusiasts will be pleased to hear Ford will add an FX4 Off-Road Package to its Expedition SUV, which goes on sale later this year.

Ford promises the package will deliver the most off-road-capable Expedition ever, and 3Birds Template couldn’t be more excited.

Capable of handling pretty much anything

The idea of giving a full-sized SUV off-road capabilities is a popular one, first originating in the Middle East, where the Expedition dug through the soft, deep sands of the Arabian Peninsula. Once Ford created the FX4 model for that region, the United States quickly followed suit, and the FX4 model has since taken off.

This year, Ford expects the new, aluminum-body model to account for 5 percent to 10 percent of sales and to continue to satiate customers’ off-road desires. The sheer size of the Expedition—the short-wheelbase of the 2017 model was 16.2 inches longer than the Jeep® Grand Cherokee—continues to become more monumental every year and better at handling any terrain out there.

Increased towing power and off-road handling

With a 9,300-pound towing capacity, the 2018 Expedition can pull 100 pounds more than its 2017 steel-bodied frame. The FX4 package will also include all-terrain tires with thicker sidewalls, seven skid plates, a sand shield to keep sand from clogging the radiator, 18-inch metallic wheels, chrome running boards, and an electronic limited-slip rear differential that varies power between the right and left rear wheels for better handling on low-traction surfaces.

All Expeditions will have a 10-speed automatic transmission and 3.5L twin-turbo EcoBoost® V-6 engine. Ford will announce prices and fuel economy ratings closer to the release of the 2018 Expedition.
