Speculation has been swirling for months around Alfa Romeo’s upcoming first SUV, but actual details are scarce. Earlier this year, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles boss Sergio Marchionne confirmed the prototype’s moniker – a reference to the famous Stelvio mountain pass that links Italy to Austria. Now, rumors suggest the Stelvio will make its debut at the 2016 Paris Motor Show October 1-16.

Alfa Romeo has confirmed its appearance at the show and will undoubtedly be showcasing its new 2017 Giulia. But there’s a good chance that the Stelvio will be on display as well, which is great news for drivers looking for a unique new take on the traditional SUV.

Expected to compete with the Audi Q-Series and BMW X-Series, the Alfa Romeo Stelvio is likely to offer a range of powertrains tuned for optimum performance. Prototype spy shots suggest a slight variation on the all-new architecture seen in the Giulia.

Reports also suggest a range-topping trim, the Stelvio Quadrifoglio Verde, which will use the same 2.9L twin-turbo V6 engine found in the Giulia Quadrifoglio. Delivering over 500 horsepower, this engine makes the Stelvio QV anything but your typical SUV.

Chances are good we’ll know more after the show. Look for more information in a future 3Birds Template newsletter.
