For the first time, Google will be working directly with an automaker to expand its self-driving vehicle testing. The company announced that it will be collaborating with Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) to develop new testing vehicles, starting with the addition of approximately 100 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid minivans.
FCA will be designing the vehicles to make it easy for Google to install its self-driving systems, including both the computers containing the self-driving software and the accompanying sensors. The partnership will more than double Google's current fleet of vehicles and provide the opportunity to test this technology with a larger, more accessible vehicle.
“FCA has a nimble and experienced engineering team and the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid minivan is well-suited for Google’s self-driving technology,” said John Krafcik, Chief Executive Officer, Google Self-Driving Car Project. “The opportunity to work closely with FCA engineers will accelerate our efforts to develop a fully self-driving car that will make our roads safer and bring everyday destinations within reach for those who cannot drive.”
33,000 deaths occur each year on U.S. roads. Self-driving technology has the potential to decrease that number and make our roads safer than ever, a goal that FCA has always shared. Sergio Marchionne, Chief Executive Officer, FCA, says that this partnership will aid both companies in reaching that goal: “The experience both companies gain will be fundamental to delivering automotive technology solutions that ultimately have far-reaching consumer benefits.”
Google will test the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid prototypes on its private test track in California prior to public operation. The company hopes to have the first few models in operation by the end of 2016.
