Chevrolet will soon be adding cars and crossovers to its B-20-capable diesel lineup. With the addition of the Chevy Cruze diesel this spring and Chevy Equinox diesel this summer, GM will offer the industry's largest lineup of diesel-powered vehicles. The full list will include Chevrolet Express full-size vans, Silverado HD full-size pickups, the Chevy Colorado mid-size pickup, Low Cab Forward commercial truck, the 2017 Cruze, and 2018 Equinox compact crossover SUV.
John Schwegman, director of commercial product and medium duty for GM Fleet, made the announcement at the National Biodiesel Conference. “With biodiesel production and retail distribution expanding, and so many proven benefits, we believe more fleets will embrace the technology as part of their sustainability plans,” Schwegman said. “If our diesel customers fueled exclusively with B20, we estimate that consumption of petroleum-based fuels could be reduced by hundreds of millions gallons annually.”
2017 Chevy Cruze Diesel
The new Cruze diesel sedan and hatchback versions will be equipped with a 1.6-liter turbo diesel engine. A 6-speed manual will come standard with the option to choose a 9-speed automatic. Fuel economy is expected to out-do the previous Cruze diesel, possibly reaching 50 mpg.
2018 Chevy Equinox Diesel
The Equinox Diesel due this summer is expected to have an impressive 40 mpg highway and is likely to be the first ever diesel-powered compact crossover sold in North America. Adding a diesel offering is sure to be welcome news to buyers in this segment. Diesel power is ideal for hauling and towing big loads, but increased fuel efficiency and driving range is still likely to be the most popular benefit.
Commercial Diesel Truck Enhancements
The 2017 Silverado HD has a redesigned Duramax® 6.6-liter V8 turbo-diesel delivering 445 horsepower. Next year, look for a new Class 4/5 conventional cab truck with a diesel engine developed in conjunction with Navistar.
