Semi-autonomous driving systems are the hot topic in automotive circles these days. Cadillac plans to add its version later this year with Super Cruise, a system unlike any other. Super Cruise will be unique as a “completely hands-free” driver-assistance technology, capable of steering, braking, and regulating speed for longer periods of time than alternative systems according to Brandon Vivian, Cadillac Executive Chief Engineer.
Continuously monitoring the driver
Other automakers’ systems only allow hands-free driving for a few seconds at a time. Cadillac Super Cruise will allow for longer hands-free periods thanks to technology that continuously monitors the driver. A series of electronic devices will keep tabs on the driver with facial recognition and eye tracking, and lights on the steering column will flash to keep the driver’s attention.
Through periodic checks, Super Cruise will make sure the driver is conscious and ready to take over when the situation arises. While Cadillac is not suggesting the driver completely disengage (no taking naps), the system should be ideal for long highway trips and busy rush hour traffic.
“The difference between our system and others is that we’ll have technology to monitor the driver and make sure that they’re being attentive,” said Vivian. "In the unlikely event of an emergency where the driver is not responsive, the vehicle does have the ability to stop safely.”
Exclusively for highway use
Super Cruise is intended for highway use only--in fact, the system will not engage at all unless the vehicle is on the highway. Super Cruise lets the driver know when the conditions are right, however. “It’s geo-fenced to interstates only,” Vivian said. "That’s just one more safeguard of the Super Cruise system to ensure its effectiveness."
Uniquely integrated technologies
Super Cruise will feature an array of integrated technologies, including optical cameras, radar, and ultrasonic sensors, all working together with adaptive cruise control. It’s this unique integration of cutting-edge technologies and advanced GPS map data that will set Cadillac apart. “The integration of all of these sensors together is what we’re going to have that’ll be different,” said Vivian.
Super Cruise is sure to be an exciting and popular entry in semi-autonomous driving technology. Look for it later this year when the Cadillac CT6 sedan arrives at 3Birds Template.
