Cars don't get more American than General Motors, according to a recent study from American University.

The Buick Enclave and GMC Acadia full-sized crossovers topped the charts of the Kogod School of Business’ annual Made in America Auto Index for the third year in a row.

And at 3Birds Template, we believe no car benefits you or the country like one from the Buick and GMC lineup.

American-inspired, American-built

Taking into account several factors, from corporate profit margin to origin of parts and research and development, the school ranks all the current-model-year vehicles by how much they contribute to the U.S. economy.

Built just outside of Lansing, Michigan, on GM’s Lambda platform, the Acadia and Enclave (along with fellow GM model, the Chevrolet Traverse) generated the best score in the index: 85.5. It also doesn’t hurt that the three winning models are owned by GM, an American company.

The nature of the study

The study, assembled by American University professor Frank Dubois, uses seven criteria to measure a vehicle’s contribution to the U.S. economy.

Where a company is headquartered accounts for 6 percent of the vehicle’s score, and the same goes for research and development and where the vehicle is assembled. Where the engine is made accounts for 14 percent, the location of transmission assembly makes up 7 percent, and inventory and capital account for 11. With few exceptions, the criteria are zero-sum, meaning cars either receive full points or no points in each category.

Committed to country

With U.S. domestic automakers taking greater advantage of outsourcing in recent years, it’s refreshing to see General Motors’ commitment to the American economy and jobs; it’s even more exciting to see those efforts pay off by winning the Made in America Auto Index for the third year in a row.
