When thinking of all-electric or hyrbid vehicles, Audi may not be the first automaker that comes to mind. That might change, however, thanks to the results of a 4-year program that just wrapped up in Germany. 3Birds Template has the details.

Like BMW and Mercedes-Benz, Audi is looking to the future of automobiles and their relationship (and reliance) on gasoline. There are a host of benefits to be gained from going partially or fully electric, and so the automaker embarked on a widespread trial to measure the performance of its A1 e-tron (and later, A3 Sportback e-tron plug-in hybrids), analayzing how often drivers needed to fill up, the average length of their daily drives, how often the vehicles were used in electric-only mode, and more.

Unsurprisingly, most drivers traveled less than 31 miles per day, with roughly half of those trips were under 6.2 miles. This meant that drivers could leave their vehicles in electric-only mode a supermajority of the time (87% of trips in the A1 models used this mode, with drives in the A3 taking advantage of the mode 70% of the time). A standout from the trial was a driver who only needed to fill up their tank one time in months, despite travelling 4,780 miles in that time.

The trial provided Audi with a sense of confidence in the direction that it's taking with its eco-friendly models, and since the automakers is expected to invest in DC fast-charging infrastructure to support the upcoming Q6 e-tron all-electric SUV, range anxiety will surely become a thing of the past.
