Here at 3Birds Template, we believe that power shouldn’t come at the expense of efficiency. That’s why we're so excited that Volkswagen has introduced an updated 2.0L turbocharged I-4 gasoline engine for use in the all-new 2018 Tiguan crossover SUV.

New and improved

The EA888 engine family has been in use since 2009 when it debuted in the Volkswagen CC sedan, and it’s currently found in the first-generation Tiguan. For the 2018 model, however, Volkswagen is upping the ante to provide drivers with a wholesale update and a new name—the EA888 Generation 3B.

Though EPA estimates are not yet available, Volkswagen predicts the new 2.0-liter EA888 Generation 3B will offer improved fuel efficiency in addition to a 20 percent boost in maximum torque.

Both EA888 engines are four-cylinder, turbocharged, direct-injection engines that use an innovative four-stroke cycle to offer improved power, efficiency, and responsiveness through innovative powertrain technology.

New engine boosts power

The new EA888 Generation 3B modifies its “breathing” to allow the engine valves to stay open for a longer duration. That means if an exhaust valve in the new Tiguan is open longer, all of the exhaust is blown out of the cylinder, which leaves room for a fully open and clean cylinder to take in the maximum gas and air on its next “gulp.” That’ll result in more power.

An increase in efficiency

Conversely, if the exhaust valve closes a little sooner, that leaves some exhaust in the cylinder; partially filled, the cylinder takes in less air and fuel in with the next stroke. This process creates a virtually smaller engine for a moment which could provide better mpg.

Expect a bump up in fuel economy

The all-new 2018 VW Tiguan will retain many features from its predecessors, but the new system’s core processors will monitor the system and adjust as needed, providing better communication to the intake and exhaust valves and improving efficiency. This new system will certainly allow Volkswagen to achieve its twin goals of power and efficiency.

The new engine will be the sole engine offered in the 2018 Tiguan, and it will later be offered in other Volkswagen models. Its large, flat torque curve and efficient combustion would be a natural fit for most of Volkswagen vehicles.
