Overview
The GMC Terrain is fully redesigned for 2018 with an emphasis on drivability, comfort, and value. Although the compact SUV’s dimensions (and weight) have been reduced, GMC has kept headroom, legroom, and maximum cargo volume competitive with the previous generation. The new Terrain also offers a versatile engine lineup that caters to just about any driving whim, whether you prefer the performance of the turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder or the fuel economy of the turbo 1.6-liter diesel.
Starting at $24,995, the 2018 GMC Terrain is available in four trim levels (SL, SLE, SLT, and the near-luxury Denali).* Every GMC Terrain comes handsomely equipped with a comfortable interior, leather-wrapped steering, rearview camera, six-speaker sound system, 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, OnStar®, and GM’s Teen Driver system. Highlights on higher trims include leather upholstery, driver assistance features like low-speed forward collision warning and mitigation with automatic braking, and navigation. The top-of-the-line Terrain Denali delivers a near-luxury experience with exclusive styling, a panoramic sunroof, and available ventilated front seats and heated rear seats.
The Perfect Ride for…
Adventurous drivers with an eye for value and quality. The 2018 Terrain is a capable compact crossover that’s just as at home during mountain getaways as it is during your daily commute—and with a surprising level of interior comfort and space, you’ll be the envy of your hiking meetup and office carpool alike. The Terrain’s high level of customizability ensures that your driving experience is the perfect fit, whether you’re looking for the peace of mind of driver-assistive safety features or the luxury of heated seating. The choice is yours.
Drive & Handling
The GMC Terrain is available with your choice of three powertrains: the standard option is a 1.5-liter 4-cylinder. Paired with a nine-speed automatic and front-wheel drive, this configuration delivers 170 horsepower and 203 pound-feet of torque and is rated at 26 mpg combined (24 mpg city, 28 mpg highway).** All-wheel drive is an option.
For those looking for more power, the Terrain can be had with a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder or a 1.6-liter diesel. With 252 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque and the same nine-speed automatic as the base engine, the turbocharged 4-cylinder is rated at 24 mpg combined (22 mpg city, 28 mpg highway) with front-wheel drive and 23 mpg combined (21 mpg city, 26 mpg highway) with all-wheel drive.**
The diesel engine delivers 137 hp and 240 lb-ft of torque and is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. Official fuel economy figures are not available, but GMC estimates diesel-equipped Terrain models will reach as much as 40 mpg on the highway.
Key Features
Inspired Connectivity
The Terrain features an available infotainment system that’s as practical and capable as the rest of the model’s updates. The optional 8-inch diagonal multi-touch screen and Bluetooth® connectivity help you stay connected with what matters while you’re on the road. Pair your phone’s screen and apps with Apple Carplay™ and Android Auto ™ compatibility and plot your course with available connected navigation featuring real-time traffic updates.
Advanced Traction Select System
This small SUV is prepared to take on the biggest challenges with features like the Traction Select system, which gives you the power to switch between drive modes on the fly based on changing driving conditions. Front-wheel drive models include Normal/Tour, Snow, and Tow/Haul modes, while all-wheel-drive models can switch between FWD, AWD, Off-Road, and Tow/Haul at will.
Alternative Options
If you’re looking for a more spacious small crossover, consider the GMC Acadia, which was redesigned last year. GMC used the opportunity of a full redesign to cut weight and added a four-cylinder engine for buyers who want better fuel economy, but still retained the Acadia’s high level of functionality. GMC’s best-selling Sierra 1500 also offers surprising comfort in a highly capable pickup package and can comfortably seat six in a double-cab configuration.
