While the Mitsubishi Outlander Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) has been available on the European and Japanese markets for a while now, those of us eagerly awaiting the popular plug-in crossover stateside have endured numerous delays.
Back in March at the 2016 New York Auto Show, Mitsubishi unveiled a prototype of the 2017 Outlander PHEV (pictured). At the time, company spokesman Alex Fedorak explained that delays were caused because U.S. market details for pricing, features, trims, and the Outlander’s battery pack were still being worked out.
Mitsubishi is currently targeting 20-ish miles of pure EV driving for U.S. models but that number has yet to be finalized.
Despite the delays, it looks like there is light at the end of the tunnel for Mitsubishi fans eager to experience the critically acclaimed 2017 Outlander PHEV. According to reports from Autoblog, the model is finally set to arrive on U.S. shores late summer, early fall.
It’s not uncommon for automakers to sell vehicles with similar specs across global markets. And while Mitsubishi could have done so with the Outlander PHEV, it’s clear the automaker took the more consumer-focused approach by tailoring the model’s performance for the U.S. market.
Getting the details just right for a U.S. launch has certainly contributed to delays, but it has also allowed the Outlander PHEV to cement its success elsewhere, and in turn prove its potential. More than 100,000 Outland PHEV models have been sold in Japan and Europe, making it just the fourth plug-in car ever to achieve that milestone.
3Birds Template is eagerly awaiting the arrival of the 2017 Outlander PHEV and cannot wait to showcase its innovative mix of clean driving and crossover utility.
