Home on the Range (Rover)
The Range Rover has been an iconic vehicle for over 40 years, and with good reason. It combines unparalleled off-road ability with the comfort and luxury of a regular car. With the current generation, Land Rover added high-tech sophistication to the mix. The Range Rover really does it all.
Performance
The Range Rover remains one of the most capable off-road vehicles available, and the current generation combines that capability with impeccable on-road manners as well as acceleration and handling that can embarrass some traditional luxury cars.
The base Range Rover engine is a 3.0-liter supercharged V6 shared with other Land Rover and Jaguar models. It produces 340 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque and, like all Range Rover engines, is mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission and four-wheel drive. Land Rover says the supercharged V6 will propel the Range Rover from 0 to 60 mph in 7.1 seconds and achieve an EPA-rated 19 mpg combined (17 mpg city, 23 mpg highway).*
Proving that luxury SUVs don’t have to be thirsty, Land Rover also offers a Range Rover Td6 model with a 3.0-liter V6 turbo-diesel engine. The diesel produces 254 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque, and all of that torque should come in handy during off-road driving. Land Rover estimates 0 to 60 mph in 7.4 seconds, and EPA-rated fuel economy is an impressive 24 mpg combined (22 mpg city, 28 mpg highway).*
The most powerful Range Rover engine is the 5.0-liter supercharged V8, which is similar to the engine used in the Jaguar F-TYPE sports car. It makes 510 horsepower and 461 lb-ft of torque, getting the Range Rover to 60 mph from a standstill in 5.1 seconds and on to a top speed of 155 mph. EPA-rated fuel economy is 16 mpg combined (14 mpg city, 19 mpg highway).* Land Rover also offers SVAutobiography and SVAutobiography Dynamic models with a 550-hp version of this engine and a combined fuel economy of 16 mpg (14 mpg city, 19 mpg highway).*
Features
The 2017 Land Rover Range Rover is a five-door, five-seat full-size luxury SUV. It is available in standard and long wheelbases, with five trim levels between them. Pricing starts at $85,650.**
Befitting a luxury flagship, the base Range Rover comes standard with an impressive array of standard equipment. Highlights include 19-inch alloy wheels, leather seating surfaces, 10-way heated power front seats with driver’s memory, 60/40-split folding rear seat, InControl Touch™ Pro infotainment system, and 13-speaker Meridian® audio system with SiriusXM® satellite radio and HD Radio™.
In addition to the applicable standard features from the base model, the Range Rover HSE adds a sliding panoramic roof with power blind, full Oxford perforated leather seats with map pockets, 14-way power adjustable front seats with headrest tilt, heated rear seats, auto-dimming exterior mirrors, 20-inch wheels, ventilated front seats, and soft door closing.
The Supercharged model adds the 5.0-liter supercharged V8, Terrain Response® 2 Auto off-road system, Dynamic Response, All-Terrain Progress Control, 21-inch wheels, fog lights, and stainless steel pedals.
Moving further toward the top, the Range Rover Autobiography adds semi-aniline front and rear heated ventilated seats with 22-way front power adjustment and massage, Meridian® surround-sound system, adaptive xenon headlights with LED signature, and several driver-assist systems.
Finally, the SVAutobiography (long-wheelbase) and SVAutobiography Dynamic (short-wheelbase) models add a higher level of luxury with bespoke touches courtesy of the automaker's Special Vehicle Operations division. Both models get a 550-hp version of the supercharged V8, plus red Brembo® brake calipers, quad exhaust, black contrast roof and mirror caps, model-specific 21-inch wheels, perforated leather headliner, and perforated semi-aniline leather seats with quilted pattern.
Design
The current-generation Range Rover is the fourth since Land Rover launched the model in 1970. But thanks to distinctive styling, today’s Range Rover is instantly recognizable as a relative of the one that debuted 48 years ago. Its upright shape, cab-rearward silhouette, and use of horizontal lines are all classic Range Rover cues. The body shape also affords short front and rear overhangs and ample ground clearance, aiding off-road driving.
While the Range Rover is among the most rugged of SUVs, it is also one of the most luxurious. Its cabin is airy and comfortable and trimmed in materials that would not be out of place in an elite luxury sedan. The Range Rover also offers plenty of tech, including a new-for-2017 10.2-inch touchscreen display and app services for the previously available InControl Touch™ Pro infotainment system.
Safety
Standard safety equipment on the 2017 Land Rover Range Rover includes anti-lock brakes, stability and traction controls, autonomous emergency braking, and a full array of airbags. Optional features include traffic sign recognition, blind spot assist, reverse traffic detection, lane keep assist, and a driver condition monitor.
