When it comes to compact CUVs, drivers have come to expect ho-hum performance and bland features. The Kia Sportage is a notable exception, and fans have been eager to see where the automaker would take its longest-running nameplate next. At the Los Angeles Auto Show, we got our answer with the North American debut of the 2017 Sportage.

The fourth-generation 2017 Kia Sportage takes its unconventional approach further than ever before with modern design, driver assistance technologies, substantial suspension and steering upgrades, and much more. With three feature-packed trims (LX, EX, SX Turbo), the new Sportage is the future of compact crossovers.

Redefined inside and out

Peter Schreyer, Kia’s president and chief design officer, headed up the Sportage’s redesign, which is visible at first glance. The most radical change is in the “face” (although every body panel on the new Sportage is all-new). Higher headlights; a lower, wider front clip; and Kia’s signature “tiger-nose” grill combine for an immediately arresting front end – a promise that the rest of the Sportage delivers on.

“Simply put, the Sportage is a breed apart in the compact CUV segment,” said Orth Hedrick, vice president, product planning KMA. “Instead of bland utility, the Sportage combines distinctly European and sporty styling with thoughtful design and functionality, including innovative packaging, premium materials, a turbocharged engine and surprising features.”

The new Sportage features a wider wheelbase and greater overall length, but retains its compact stance. The result is a CUV that’s spacious yet versatile, bold yet practical – affordable yet unforgettable.

Introducing the next generation of Kia telematics: UVO3

When the all-new Sportage launches, it will offer a Kia first: UVO3, the latest version of Kia’s award-winning telematics and infotainment system. This new system provides access to a world of apps, features, and services, including:

  • Android™ Auto
  • Apple CarPlay® (late availability)
  • UVO eServices featuring 14 telematics services
  • Up to 8 GB of music storage
  • On-screen apps including Pandora® and Soundhound

The rest of the Sportage’s technology offerings are similarly expansive. A standard five-inch touchscreen offers Bluetooth® hands-free phone operation and streaming audio, SiriusXM® satellite radio, and convenient rear-camera display.

Every Sportage also includes a 160-watt six- speaker audio system for a crisp listening experience. Of course, you can always build your own enhanced Sportage experience with options including larger touchscreens, onboard navigation, and 320-watt harmon/kardon® premium audio system.
