Overview
Available as a sedan or hatchback, the 2017 Kia Rio has made a big impression in the subcompact segment with its penchant for value, its spacious back seat, and its exceptional warranty. This capable car also starts at just $14,165,1 making it ideal for shoppers on a budget.
Despite its affordable price tag, though, the Rio offers a surprising level of accouterments across its three trims (although the sedan is only available in two). The base Rio LX includes highlights such as heated power mirrors, a trip computer, a cargo area cover in the hatchback, and a four-speaker sound system. The Rio EX adds keyless entry with power windows and door locks, upgraded cloth upholstery, and a six-speaker audio system with Bluetooth® connectivity. The hatchback-only Rio SX includes all of the above as well as a sportier suspension, a navigation system, rearview camera, and the UVO infotainment system (see details below).
The Perfect Ride for…
New grads and other first-time car buyers as well as urban drivers where space is at a premium. The pint-sized Rio fits well into every aspect of your life and is surprisingly capable when it comes to shuttling a couple of friends around the city. Plus, the Rio comes with Kia’s industry-leading 10-year/100,000-mile warranty2 so you can enjoy peace of mind on your many adventures.
Drive & Handling
The Rio’s sole powertrain option is a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine rated at 138 horsepower and 123 pound-feet of torque. Front-wheel drive with a six-speed manual comes standard; a Sportmatic® automatic option with clutchless manual shifting is also available. The manual Rio is rated at 31 mpg combined (27 mpg city, 36 mpg highway) while automatic versions get an EPA-estimated 30 mpg combined (27 mpg city, 36 mpg highway).3
For the eco-nomically minded, there’s also an available Eco package that adds Intelligent Stop and Go technology to help optimize fuel efficiency by shutting down the engine when the vehicle is at a standstill. Eco-equipped Rio models get the same fuel economy as the manual version.
Key Features
UVO eServices
The available UVO infotainment system with eServices is like having your own personal co-pilot—one who responds to your voice or touch controls to provide turn-by-turn directions, access your favorite apps, and more. Pair your phone with Bluetooth® wireless technology and make hands-free calls at your convenience. There’s no subscription, and the free smartphone app makes it even easier to stay connected with your Kia.
Advanced Driver-Assistive Safety
Be ready for the unexpected with the Rio’s suite of advanced driver-assistive systems. Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) provides added steering control while Electronic Stability Control (ESC) helps keep you on course. Electronic Brake-Force Distribution (EBD) intelligently adjusts front and rear braking depending on load, while the anti-lock braking system senses emergency braking situations and boosts brake pressure accordingly.
Alternative Options
Refreshed for 2017, the new Kia Forte boasts a new 2.0-liter engine, updated styling, and more convenience and driver-assistance features. With 39.1 inches of front and 37.3 inches of rear headroom, as well as 42.2 inches of front and 35.9 inches of rear legroom, this handsome compact is ideal for on-the-go drivers and their friends. Kia also offers the related Forte5 five-door hatchback and Forte Koup two-door coupe.
