Sharper claws

When it launched in convertible form in 2014, many had a good idea but few envisioned what a breakaway success the Jaguar F-TYPE would go on to be. Tasked with replacing the aging XK, the F-TYPE has revitalized the Jaguar brand, proving to the world that a true sports car is not only something the British automaker was willing to do, but that it could do it well—very well. Three years later and we’re still smitten with this superbly smart and stylish kitty.

Performance

The 2017 Jaguar F-TYPE Coupe is offered with an array of powertrains that provide the performance to match the eye-popping exterior styling. This cat can really roar.

The entry-level engine in the F-TYPE Coupe is a 3.0-liter supercharged V6 that produces 340 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque. Power is sent to the rear wheels via either a six-speed manual transmission or an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The 340-hp F-TYPE Coupe will do 0 to 60 mph in 5.1 seconds and reach an electronically limited top speed of 161 mph. With the eight-speed automatic, the EPA-rated gas mileage is 23 mpg combined (19 mpg city, 28 mpg highway),* not bad for a supercharged sports car.

Next up is the F-TYPE S Coupe, which features the same 3.0-liter supercharged V6, but with the power dial turned up to 380 hp and 339 lb-ft of torque. That helps the model reach 60 mph in a lightning-fast 4.8 seconds, and hit an electronically limited top speed of 177 mph. S models are available with all-wheel drive for drivers dealing with slightly more treacherous weather conditions. Fuel economy is rated at 22 mpg combined (18 mpg city, 26 mpg highway) for RWD models.*

For those that require even more performance, there's the F-TYPE R Coupe. It features a 5.0-liter supercharged V8 with 550 hp and 502 lb-ft of torque. With all of that power, the R Coupe can sprint from 0 to 60 mph in four seconds flat and reach a top speed of 186 mph. Driven a little less aggressively, it will also achieve 18 mpg combined (16 mpg city, 23 mpg highway).* Instinctive All-Wheel Drive® is standard on all R models.

We've saved the most ferocious F-TYPE for last. The F-TYPE SVR Coupe is not for the faint of heart. It's powered by a 5.0-liter V8 that makes use of a twin-vortex supercharger, which helps reduce drag and surge for even more responsive performance. As if that wasn't enough, the F-TYPE SVR will take you from 0-60 mph in just 3.5 seconds, on its way to a top speed of 200 mph.

Features

Starting at $61,400,** the 2017 Jaguar F-TYPE Coupe is a two-seat hardtop that complements the F-TYPE convertible, which was introduced as a 2014 model.

Befitting a luxury sports car wearing the prestigious Jaguar badge, the F-TYPE Coupe comes well-equipped no matter which model you choose. Key features include a leather-wrapped steering wheel, 18-inch Vela alloy wheels, sport exhaust with center-mounted twin exhaust pipes, and Jaguar Performance Braking System with silver calipers.

The F-TYPE Premium adds adaptive front lighting and intelligent high beam control, leather and suedecloth sport seat with power adjustment and driver memory, a GPS navigation system, a panoramic sunroof, and a 770-watt Meridian™ audio system.

The F-TYPE S comes with its list of goods. Here, you'll find 19-inch propeller alloy wheels, steering wheel-mounted shift paddles in Ignis orange (AT only), active sport exhaust, and configurable dynamic mode, which allows you to fine-tune the engine, steering, gearshift and suspension characteristics to best suit your driving style.

Like its name suggests, the F-TYPE S AWD benefits from Instinctive All Wheel Drive®. It replaces the F-TYPE S trim's 19-inch propeller alloy wheels for its own Volution alloy wheels. Other key features include configurable dynamics mode, body colored rear valance, side sill extensions, aero splitters, and hood louvers.

The F-TYPE R Coupe boasts standard dual-zone climate control, reverse parking sensors, and a three-spoke, flat-bottomed steering wheel paired with upgraded sport seats, in addition to the applicable features from previous trims.

Perched and ready to pounce atop the lineup is the F-TYPE SVR. In addition to its upgraded engine, the F-TYPE SVR boasts unique Coriolis alloy wheels, lightweight titanium and Inconel® exhaust, chassis and cooling enhancements, advanced aerodynamics, and suedecloth upper environment.

In addition, there are several standalone options and packages available. These include the Vision Pack, which adds Adaptive Front Lighting, among other features; the Premium Pack, which includes a 14-way power adjustable driver’s seat with memory; a Valet Mode that locks out the trunk and glovebox; and the Climate Pack, which features a heated steering wheel and seats.

Design

It’s no exaggeration to say the 2017 Jaguar F-TYPE Coupe is one of the best-looking new cars on the road. Taking full advantage of the car’s classic front-engine, rear-wheel drive layout, Jaguar designers created a modern interpretation of the legendary E-Type from the 1960s.

The F-TYPE Coupe’s silhouette mirrors that of the E-Type coupe, but the new car has much more muscular proportions and modern touches like flush-mounted door handles and a pop-up rear spoiler.

At the back, dual center-exit exhaust (V6) or quad exhaust (V8) make the F-TYPE unmistakable to the many people it will leave in its dust. Standard alloy wheels and colored brake calipers (different, depending on the model) complete the look.

The interior blends sportiness and luxury. Both the standard round steering wheel or the R Coupe’s flat-bottomed version feel good in a driver’s hands and feature redundant audio controls. The interior itself is relatively spacious for a two-seat sports car and can be upgraded with premium leather.

Safety

Even a car as indulgent as the F-TYPE Coupe needs to address safety. It comes standard with anti-lock brakes, stability and traction control, and front and side airbags. With the optional Vision Pack, blind spot monitoring and rear traffic detection are also available.

Verdict

The 2017 Jaguar F-TYPE Coupe takes the already-marvelous F-TYPE Convertible and adds an extra dose of style and performance. The coupe’s silhouette is like nothing else on the road right now and, with the R Coupe and SVR's 5.0-liter V8, very few cars will be able to keep up with it.
