The 2016 Scion iM offers an impressive combination of value and utility. The iM is based on the European-market Toyota Auris, but got a complete restyle and reshuffling of equipment for its transition to the U.S. The iM is a competent five-door hatchback, and Scion’s all-inclusive pricing policy makes it a compelling choice in this popular segment.
Sadly, the clock is ticking for customers that want a Scion-badged iM. After August 2016, the iM will join the Toyota family of cars as the Corolla iM.
Powertrain and Performance
The 2016 Scion iM is only offered with one powertrain, but it’s all you’ll ever need in this refreshingly simple hatchback.
A 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine produces 137 horsepower and 126 pound-feet of torque. It features Valvematic variable-valve timing to broaden the torque curve, meaning the iM should feel responsive in all situations. There are also two transmission choices: a six-speed manual, and a CVT automatic.
The manual transmission is the obvious choice for driving enthusiasts, and comes with a handy hill-start assist feature. The CVT is by no means a slouch, though, thanks to some sporty tuning. While CVTs don’t have actual gears, this transmission features seven virtual shift points to simulate the stepped shifting of a conventional transmission. There’s also a sport mode which alters both shift points and steering feel, plus the ability to change “gears” manually with the console-mounted lever.
One typical advantage of a compact hatchback is fuel economy, and the iM doesn’t disappoint in that area. With the CVT, the Scion is rated at 32 mpg combined 28 mpg city, 37 mpg highway) by the EPA,* while manual-transmission models are rated at 31 mpg combined (27 mpg city, 36 mpg highway).*
There’s no reason why an economy shouldn’t be fun, too. The iM rides on the same platform used by the Scion tC coupe, with ample use of high-strength steel and other structural reinforcements to keep the chassis as rigid as possible. Fully-independent suspension should ensure positive handling traits, and the rear double-wishbone design also improves cargo space.
Features and Trims
The 2016 Scion iM is available only as a compact five-door, five-seat hatchback, and is priced starting at $18,460.** As with all Scion models, the iM is offered in a single trim level with all available equipment standard at a set price. The only options buyers choose are the transmission and various dealer-installed accessories.
Standard equipment includes 17-inch alloy wheels, dual-zone automatic climate control, a rearview camera, a 4.2-inch multi-information display, leather-trimmed tilt/telescoping steering wheel with secondary controls, sport front bucket seats, a 60/40 split-folding rear bench seats, USB port with iPod® connectivity, Bluetooth® hands-free phone and streaming audio, a six-speaker Pioneer audio system, and 7.0-inch central display screen.
Design
The 2016 Scion iM is based on the European-market Toyota Auris, and so brings some Euro style to the compact-car segment. The hexagonal lower grille, sharp headlights, and side bezels give the front end a sleek look, and in the details there are even hints of Scion’s FR-S sports car. Piano-black grille trim, LED daytime running lights, and a “swoosh line” along the car’s flanks add a little more visual interest.
There’s plenty of practicality as well. The standard sport seats are well-bolstered, and designed in a way to reduce whiplash in the event of a crash. The iM also features an acoustic-layer windshield, foam-type insulation, and floor silencer sheets for an extra-quiet cabin, all of which make it better to hear the standard six-speaker audio system with. A genuine leather-covered steering wheel with controls for audio, the multi-information display, and Bluetooth® is another nice feature.
A five-door hatchback provides excellent utility in a compact footprint, and with the iM, Scion has a quality entry into this segment. Five occupants get a spacious 90.4 cubic feet, and there’s 20.8 cubic feet of cargo volume with the rear seats up. Those seats can also split fold for longer items, or to add more cargo space.
Safety
Standard safety equipment on the 2016 Scion iM includes a comprehensive safety system—which bundles stability control, traction control, anti-lock brakes, and related features—driver and passenger front- and seat-mounted side airbags, a driver knee airbag, passenger seat cushion airbag, and front and rear side-curtain airbags.
