New for 2016

Two new models join the IS line for 2016. The IS 200t sports a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, and is joined by the all-wheel drive IS 300 and its 3.5-liter V6.

Raising the Bar

The entry-level luxury-sedan segment is as competitive as they come, with a number of strong candidates to choose from. In a segment where excellence is the bare minimum, the 2016 Lexus IS does more than enough to stand out. Not only does it sport a striking exterior, but the IS is made all the more attractive thanks to its advanced technology, impressive performance, and signature Lexus quality.

Performance

The Lexus IS is one of the few entry-level luxury sedans that actually backs up its dynamic styling with equally dynamic driving characteristics. There are three engines to choose from each more powerful than the last.

The base model is the 200t.  It’s powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 241 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. Power is sent to the rear wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission, and the 200t returns an exceptional 26 mpg combined (22 city/33 highway). *

The IS 300 serves up even more dynamism. It’s powered by a 3.5-liter V6 that makes 255 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque. It makes use of a six-speed automatic transmission that handles shifting duty with aplomb, ensuring gear shifts are both smooth and responsive. Equally responsive is the IS 300’s handling, which trades in the 200t’s RWD setup for all-wheel drive.

EPA-estimated fuel economy for the IS 300 is rated at 21 mpg combined (19 city/26 highway).*

If it’s out-and-out performance you crave, the IS 350 also has a 3.5-liter V6. It ups the ante by generating 306 hp and 277 pound-feet of torque. Whereas both the 200t and IS 300 are limited to RWD or AWD, respectively, the IS 350 can be had with either. Choosing the former gets you the eight-speed automatic, while choosing the latte comes with a six-speed automatic.

EPA-estimated fuel economy for the RWD IS 350 is rated at 22 mpg combined (19 city/ 28 highway), while selecting AWD returns the same fuel economy as the IS 300.*

Regardless of engine choice, the 2016 Lexus IS delivers exceptional road manners. Especially pleasing is the model’s steering, which inspires confidence in all situations. And despite its performance-focused nature, the IS’ ride quality is particularly upscale, with all the suppleness and refinement you’ve come to expect from the Lexus brand.

Features

The 2016 Lexus IS starts at $37,325,* and is available in three different trims (200t, IS 300, IS 350), with the main difference for each model being engine size.

Standard equipment across the lineup includes 17-inch wheels (upgraded to 18-inches on the IS 350), LED running lights, foglights, and taillights, as well as heated exterior mirrors, keyless entry/ignition, and dual-zone automatic climate control.

IS models also come with a number of in-demand technology features as standard. These include Bluetooth® phone and audio connectivity and an eight-inch color display, complete with console-mounted control dial, voice command functionality, and Siri Eyes Free. Also standard is an eight-speaker sound system with CD player, HD Radio®, and dual USB ports for plugging in external devices.

While the standard equipment found across the IS lineup is sure to satisfy even the most discerning driver, Lexus offers a number of packages that further outfit your IS to meet your needs.

The Premium package, for example, adds LED headlights, heated and ventilated front seats, and a rearview camera. While the Premium Plus package adds creature comforts, such as automatic wipers, a power-adjustable steering wheel, and blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert. There’s also a Navigation package that replaces the standard infotainment control dial with Lexus Remote Touch controller and adds the titular navigation, along with a rearview camera, enhanced Bluetooth®, and more.

Rounding out the available packages are a Luxury package and an F sport package, the latter of which–optional on all three IS trim levels–adds a full mesh grille, a sport-tuned suspension, upgraded brake pads, sport seats, and other performance-focused exterior and interior touches.

Design

In the past, and when it came to exterior design, Lexus has typically played it safe. The 2016 Lexus IS is a wild departure from that, sporting stylish good looks that help distinguish it among other segment rivals.

The 2016 IS sports a striking exterior. It’s one that’s not quickly forgotten, nor is it one you’ll grow tired of any time soon. Here we have one of the most impressive uses of the Lexus “spindle grille,” made even more impressive with the F Sport trim’s brasher mesh version.

Other elements work just as well. Its dynamic lines, angles, and panels help breathe life into its more functional elements. And its wide stance and long wheelbase provide heft to its visual appeal, all while directly enhancing performance.

Inside, the IS bears a familial resemblance to the larger GS sedan, and occupants will no doubt love its quality craftsmanship and signature Lexus polish. The dashboard, armrests, steering wheel and even the sides of the center console (where knees tend to rub) are swathed in dense, high-quality padding.

Instrumentation is one area where the IS truly impresses, thanks to an intelligent layout and controls that are easy to use. And the front seats are both comfortable and supportive. There’s also plenty of leg room in the back, making every seat in the house an enjoyable one.

Safety

The 2016 Lexus IS incorporates many intelligent safety features as standard, including antilock disc brakes with brake assist, traction and stability control, front seat side airbags, front knee airbags, side curtain airbags, and rear-seat side airbags.

Lexus Enform Safety Connect is also standard and integrates automatic collision notification, a stolen-vehicle locator, an emergency assist button, and roadside assistance.

Verdict

The 2016 IS boasts a striking design and equally riveting performance. More impressive is that it does so while providing Lexus’ signature refinement and quality.
