New for 2016
The 2016 Lexus GS unveils new features on a series update, offers improvements to drivability, and includes a new model release with the addition of the GS 200t.
Upgraded Definition of Luxury
Continuing the Lexus tradition of combining luxury with a sports twist, the newly redesigned GS offers aesthetic improvements and a whole new driving experience.
With three different models to choose from and a variety of styling options, these luxury sedans combine the classic Lexus grille with added power and performance.
Powertrain and Performance
All three models in the GS series offer impressive power, with the 200t kicking off the update with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that offers an exceptionally smooth acceleration. Combined with an eight-speed automatic transmission, this car moves from standing to highway speeds without a hitch. The engine offers 241 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, all with a fuel economy of an estimated 33 mpg highway.*
Combining all of these features allows the GS 200t with rear-wheel drive to deliver outstanding performance and efficiency, without sacrificing on the luxury details.
For a bit more power, explore the GS 350, with its 3.5-liter V6 engine. Also using the eight-speed automatic transmission, this model produces 311 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque, a significant upgrade over the previous year at only 306 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque. Direct fuel injection and added port fuel injectors give this sedan plenty of power and responsiveness for tackling the most winding highways.
As a leader in luxury hybrids, it is no surprise that the last GS model in the series, the 450h, is a stunning addition to luxury cars with a reduced carbon footprint. Putting out 338 total system horsepower, under the hood of the 450h is the Lexus Hybrid Drive system, pulling power from both the Atkinson cycle 3.5-liter V6 engine and a permanent-magnet electric motor that is water cooled.
What really sets this hybrid offering apart is its fast and smooth acceleration, moving from zero to 60 mph in 5.6 seconds. When combined with an estimated fuel economy of 29 mpg city and 31 mpg highway, this model blows away the competition.*
Also available is an all-new GS F model, which we reviewed separately.
Features and Trims
The 2016 Lexus GS 200t starts off at $45,615** for the base model. It is a four-door sedan with an optional upgrade to the Sport trim which includes all-weather drive and a sport-tuned suspension for more responsive handling.
All models of the GS can upgrade to include the Lexus Safety System®, which bundles several assistance features. Included is the pre-collision warning, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, self-adjusting high beams, blind spot warning and rear cross-traffic alert, making all GS models both a smooth and safe driving experience.
Upgraded audio options package the Mark Levinson® Premium Surround Sound Audio system for clear tones at any volume. Distance drivers will appreciate the optional navigation package, which offers voice activation and the installation of a 12.3-inch split screen multimedia center console.
Premium packages also add on some features that make driving a pleasure, like rain-sensing wipers, heated and ventilated front seats and a power rear sunshade to help keep interior temperatures comfortable in any weather.
Design
With a bolder design and the addition of the new GS 200t in a rear-wheel drive model, along with some new luxury finishes, this model series continues to impress. Flexible handling and responsive performance bring this from a classic, luxury sedan into a category of its own.
The new take on the classic Lexus spindle grille, flanked by the added Bi-LED headlights, makes this car recognizably a Lexus at any distance.
Although a mid-sized sedan, much of the styling has been inspired by a coupe profile, with a new front bumper and rocker panel design that plays well with the inspiration.
The makeover did not stop with the front. The revised tail lights and rear trim, along with 18- and 19-inch machine-finish wheels, are bold choices for a bold design.
The interior gets an update with some new leather color choices, such as Matador Red Mica, Nightfall Mica and Ultrasonic Blue Mica 2.0. The beauty of the mica colors comes from the process of multi-layering and twice-baked colors. Before this Lexus addition, these colors only made appearances on concept and custom cars.
Not all colors are available for all packages, so be prepared to upgrade for added options.
Safety
In keeping with its luxury brand, Lexus also offers a host of safety features that come standard with every GS, including anti-lock brakes, Smart Stop® technology and 10 airbags. Adding the optional Lexus Safety System® also adds whiplash-lessening front seat backs, blind-spot monitoring, and more.
Bottom Line
The 2016 Lexus GS series is a lot more than a mid-sized luxury sedan; it is practically a sports car. Combining luxury and performance, it gives drivers confidence with features like hill start assist control and lane monitoring systems, in addition to some heavy horsepower under the hood.
