New for 2016
The Superveloce is an all-new version of the Aventador, joining the existing LP700-4 in the lineup.
The Most Extreme Lamborghini Ever
With its hexagonal styling and powerful V12 engine, the Lamborghini Aventador is one of the most extreme supercars around. But extreme is everyday business at Lamborghini, so when the company’s engineers and designers really want to let their hair down, they create a car like the 2016 Aventador LP750-4 Superveloce. This is an Aventador on steroids, with enhanced performance and even more extreme styling.
Performance
The Superveloce or “SV” designation is only used on the ultimate performance version of any given Lamborghini model. With ancestors like the legendary Miura SV and Murciélago LP670-4 SV, the Aventador LP750-4 Superveloce has a lot to live up to.
As in other Lamborghini models, the alphanumeric code following the name provides some important information about the car. “LP” stands for “longitudinale posteriore,” referring to the engine’s longitudinal position behind the driver. The number “750” refers to the 6.5-liter V12 engine’s output on the metric system; on the U.S. system it’s actually rated at 740 hp, and 509 pound-feet of torque. That’s more than the 691 hp and 507 lb-ft of the non-SV Aventador, achieved largely thanks to a new exhaust system.
Finally, “-4” stands for all-wheel drive. The SV uses a Haldex Generation IV electronically controlled coupling system that can adjust the front-to-rear torque distribution in milliseconds. A self-locking differential at the rear and an electronic locking diff at the front are tied to the stability control to maximize performance.
What does all of that mean in terms of performance? Well, Lamborghini claims the Aventador SV will do 0 to 62 mph in 2.8 seconds, 0 to 124 mph in 8.6 seconds, and 0 to 186 mph in 24.0 seconds. This car also has a top speed of around 217 mph, and can brake to a full stop from 62 mph in 98.4 feet. EPA fuel-economy figures aren’t available yet, but the “regular” Aventador LP700-4 is rated at 13 mpg combined (11 mpg city, 18 mpg highway).*
To turn the Aventador into the Aventador SV, Lamborghini dumped some weight, and added some serious hardware. The SV weighs 3,868 pounds, or 217 pounds less than an Aventador LP700-4. That’s partially thanks to a carbon-fiber engine cover, rear wing, air intakes, door panels, rear diffuser, and seats. In addition to being lightweight, the wing and diffuser really work, providing actual downforce.
To ensure that it handles as well as it accelerates, the SV also features magnetorheological dampers and massive carbon-ceramic brakes. Lamborghini Dynamic Steering electric power steering helps make the SV easier to drive without sacrificing feel.
Features
The 2016 Lamborghini Aventador LP750-4 SV is a two-door, two-seat mid-engined supercar. It’s available as a coupe or a roadster, and priced starting from around $500,000.**
The SV is distinguished from other Aventador models primarily by the performance components mentioned above. It also comes standard with items like staged (20-inch front, 21-inch rear) alloy wheels, a TFT display that takes the place of a traditional gauge cluster, and a Drive Select system with Strada (road), Sport, and Corsa (track) modes.
Design
The 2016 Lamborghini Aventador LP750-4 SV looks brash and outrageous like a Lamborghini should, but the exterior styling is about more than showing off. In upgrading the performance of the Aventador to create the SV, Lamborghini paid close attention to aerodynamics while making its changes.
Overall aerodynamics was optimized 150 percent in terms of efficiency, and 170 percent in terms of downforce generation compared to the standard Aventador. This is achieved through elements like the huge adjustable rear wing, rear diffuser, and numerous scoops and ducts meant to channel air around the car, or cool vital components.
The fanatical dedication to aerodynamic performance also completely changes the look of the car. The standard Aventador is no shrinking violet, but the SV reaches a whole new level of craziness. Both the front and rear ends now have a more open appearance, thanks to the numerous air intakes and vents that break up the more solid surfaces of the standard car. The almost unbelievably wide rear wheels give the SV a menacing stance.
The same philosophy informs the minimalist interior. Bits of the Aventador’s carbon-fiber monocque are exposed, and the sport seats are basically carbon-fiber shells with some padding. The instrument cluster is new, with bright yellow graphics for the TFT display screen, a G-force meter, and shift lights. The SV is also the first production Lamborghini to use the company’s Carbon Skin material, a fabric that incorporates woven carbon fiber.
Safety
Standard safety equipment on the 2016 Lamborghini Aventador LP750-4 SV includes anti-lock brakes, stability and traction controls, and a full array of airbags.
Verdict
The 2016 Lamborghini Aventador LP750-4 SV takes its rightful place as the most extreme Lamborghini ever.
