New for 2016
The 2016 Sportage undergoes some reshuffling of equipment. The EX’s standard Infinity audio and UVO are replaced by leather seating and Smart Key with push-button start, while the LX’s Popular package gains a touchscreen display and rearview camera. Finally, the SX loses its xenon headlights but comes standard with the previously optional panoramic sunroof and ventilated front seats.
Expectations: Exceeded
The 2016 Kia Sportage remains one of the most stylish and attractive compact crossover SUVs around, and one that exceeds expectation year in and year out. While it continues to win over consumers with its sleek styling, the Sportage is more than just a pretty face. It also offers nimble handling and strong performance, the latter of which is helped along by way of an available turbocharged engine.
The 2016 Kia Sportage is a special kind of SUV, one that blends style, performance, one of the very best warranties around, and a price point even more attractive than its smartly styled exterior. What more could we ask for?
Power and Performance
The 2016 Kia Sportage can be had with one of two distinct engines. A 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine serves as the core option, and churns out 182 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque, while an available and more powerful turbocharged 2.0-liter produces 260 horsepower and 269 pound-feet of torque. Both engine types are mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard, but for those in less agreeable climates, all-wheel drive is available.
The 2016 Kia Sportage earns some impressive fuel economy numbers, to boot. Front-wheel drive non-turbocharged models earn an EPA-estimated 24 mpg combined while all-wheel drive models see that number dip ever so slightly to 22 mpg combined.* Turbocharged 2.0-liter models earn an EPA-estimated 22 mpg combined (20 city/26 highway) when equipped with FWD,* and 21 mpg combined (19 city/25 highway) with all-wheel drive.*
Features and Trims
The 2016 Kia Sportage starts at just $22,150* and is available in LX, EX, and SX trims.
The Sportage has built its reputation on providing owners with a desirable helping of standard features, and the 2016 LX model continues this trend. Standard equipment includes 17-inch alloy wheels, air-conditioning, a height-adjustable driver seat, and 60/40 split-folding reclining second-row seats. Added to the mix are full power accessories, cruise control, and a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel.
Noteworthy standard electronic and tech features include a six-speaker audio system with CD player and satellite radio as well as Bluetooth® smartphone connectivity and USB/iPod® support.
Feel like decking out your Sportage even further? No problem. LX models get access to a Popular package that adds a rear spoiler, automatic headlights, and rearview camera, among other features.
The Sportage EX gets all the content from the LX and Popular package, along with 18-inch alloy wheels, heated side mirrors, dual-zone automatic climate control, heated front seats, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. The EX also includes an upgraded sound system, keyless entry and ignition, leather upholstery, six-way power driver seat, and Kia's popular UVO telematics system, which uses advanced voice-activation technology to help make hands-free calls, listen to streaming audio, and more. .
There's also an available EX Premium package that adds heated power-folding side mirrors, a gorgeous panoramic sunroof, a cooled glovebox, and a navigation system that pairs nicely with the package's 7-inch touchscreen display and Infinity sound system.
Finally, the top-tier SX model features a turbocharged engine and LED taillights. The SX also benefits from 18-inch wheels and a unique front grille, while dual exhaust outlets provide the finishing touches on this sporty compact crossover SUV.
And of course, all Kia models, including the 2016 Sportage, are backed by a standard 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty.
Design
Without a doubt the 2016 Kia Sportage is one of the best looking crossover SUVs around. Sharp lines and a distinct grill give it a menacing yet athletic appearance, while the introduction of available LED taillamps and HID daytime running lamps provide further sophistication to an already eye-catching design. We’d be remiss if we didn’t mention the Sportage’s imposing big wheels and pinched greenhouse, which further add to the car’s distinct and engaging appearance.
While it’s easy to lose track of time staring at the Sportage’s handsome exterior, it’s inside where you’ll truly be amazed. Thankfully, Kia has gone through great lengths to ensure the interior matches the same level of thoughtfulness and quality found throughout the rest of the vehicle. Occupants are greeted to a stylish and warm interior that is both spacious and versatile. The available panoramic sunroof is likely to be a particular favorite, while the voluminous 54.5 cubic feet of cargo space will prove more than adequate for most.
Safety
The 2016 Kia Sportage comes standard with a great deal of safety features. Highlights include antilock disc brakes, traction and stability control, front-seat side airbags, full-length side curtain airbags, and active front head restraints. A rollover sensor is also standard as are hill start assist and downhill brake control.
The 2016 Kia Sportage also features the latest and most advanced version of Kia’s UVO eServices. UVO eServices provides everything from emergency roadside assistance to stolen vehicle tracking. With UVO, parents can also remotely (via the UVO mobile app) set up geo-fencing and speed tracking parameters for teen drivers.
Bottom Line
The 2016 Kia Sportage continues to win over drivers with its outstanding performance and exceptional value. It’s sharply dressed exterior is enough to draw anyone in, but the Sportage takes things a step further by delivering a fun drive and functional interior. It’s everything you could want from a sporty crossover SUV, and then some.
