New for 2016
You don’t need to get your eyes checked—the Kia Sorento really is all-new and better than ever for the 2016 model year.
A New Challenger Emerges
The midsize Kia Sorento has always had the ambition to take on competitors above its weight class, offering practical performance in a slightly larger-than-compact SUV frame. The debut of the fourth-generation Sorento marks a transformation from scrappy contender to self-assured champion.
How does one achieve such a remarkable evolution? In the 2016 Kia Sorento’s case, the answer is simple: take what the previous model did well (optimized cargo area, extensive features list) and do it better, while also delivering a level of overall quality that’s anything but standard in this class.
Powertrains and Performance
A new turbocharged four-cylinder brings the number of available Sorento engines up to three, joining the standard 2.4-liter four-cylinder and performance-geared 3.3-liter V6. All Sorento models come with a six-speed automatic and front wheel drive – all-wheel drive is available on LX models and above.
The base four-cylinder offers 185 horsepower and 178 pound-feet of torque – enough power to keep the ride consistently smooth and also deliver impressive fuel economy. In the standard configuration, you can expect up to 24 mpg combined (21 city/29 highway).* All-wheel drive models return an estimated 23 mpg combined.*
If you’re looking for more pep than the 2.4L but don’t want to commit to the 3.3L, the turbocharged V4 is a winning compromise. The 240 hp and 260 lb-ft deliver more exhilarating acceleration and overall confidence under the pedal, and mileage is steady at 23 mpg combined (20 city/27 highway) (FWD).* All-wheel drive will bring you to 22 mpg combined.*
Finally, the 3.3L emphasizes power with 290 hp and 252 lb-ft of torque. FWD models get an estimated 21 mpg combined (18 city/26 highway),* while AWD models are rated at 19 mpg combined.*
Features and Trims
Kia offers the Sorento in L, LX, EX, SX, and SX Limited trims with five- and/or seven-passenger configurations depending on trim. L models as well as all models with the turbocharged four-cylinder are five-passenger only. V6 models are seven-passenger only, and the four-cylinder LX is available in either layout.
The Sorento has always been generous when it comes to standard features, but the list on the 2016 model may just make you feel like you’re getting away with something—in a good way. The Sorento L comes with LED running lights; three driving modes; air-conditioning; Bluetooth phone and audio; CD player; satellite radio; and steering-wheel mounted buttons for audio, phone, and cruise control.
Simply upgrade to the LX level and enjoy Kia’s UVO eServices infotainment system, which offers enhanced in-car connectivity for your personal devices through a 4.3-inch touchscreen interface. Other additions include a rearview camera, automatic headlights, sound-absorbing windshield glass, and roof rails.
The LX level is also available with a useful Convenience package, which adds amenities like rear parking sensors, a power driver’s seat, heated front seats, and a leather-trimmed steering wheel.
These features are all included with the EX trim, along with larger wheels, leather interior, and dual-zone automatic climate control. At this level, buyers can opt for the Premium package (hands-free power liftgate, blind-spot and cross-traffic alert, trip computer, and more). A Touring package can be added to the Premium features to incorporate a panoramic sunroof, eight-inch touchscreen, navigation system, and 10-speaker Infinity® sound system with Clari-Fi™.
By now, you’re seeing the trend—the SX includes the Premium and Touring packages plus 19-inch wheels, more power driver’s seat options, driver memory settings, and auto-dimming rearview mirror. The top-of-the-line SX Limited includes chrome-accented wheels, upgraded leather, ventilation for the front seats, and heating for the second row. Finally, the available Technology Package adds an array of advanced features, including xenon headlights, adaptive cruise control, and lane-departure and forward collision warning systems.
Design
If it were simply practical and spacious, the Sorento would already be a strong choice in its segment. For 2016, though, Kia has introduced cutting-edge design and premium materials that make the Sorento an aesthetic pleasure as well as an affordable one.
With bold sculpting and a wider stance than previous generations, the 2016 Sorento makes a strong first impression. Intelligent touches abound throughout the design, like the body-color mirrors with turn signal indicators and the LED light bar above the headlights.
The interior of the Sorento also demands respect, whether outfitted in the standard stain-resistant fabric or the leather upholstery of higher trim levels. Available leather and wood accents for the steering wheel and gearshift handle add an additional level of luxury.
The designers obviously gave great thought to the interior layout, which provides useful cargo space even with the optional third row of seats. There are also plenty of convenient storage locations throughout, including a center console with armrest, dual front cup holders, and front- and rear-door bottle holders.
Safety
Given its role as a leading choice for families and roadtrippers, the Sorento doesn’t skimp on safety. A comprehensive airbag system and three-point seatbelts protect driver and passenger in the case of a collision, while Vehicle Stability Management (VSM), stability and traction control, and Electronic Brake-Force Distribution (EBD) help to prevent such scenarios in the first place.
Drivers can complement these features with advanced safety technologies as part of higher trims and package options. Options like Rear Cross Traffic Alert (which scans for passing objects when you back up and alerts you to obstacles) and Advanced Smart Cruise Control (which automatically maintains a safe distance between you and the vehicle ahead) make peace of mind more convenient than ever.
Bottom Line
Kia has delivered on the promise of past Sorento generations with a new design that’s smart, stylish, and built to last. With the latest in technology and safety features, the 2016 Sorento is poised to capture the attention of anyone looking for a spacious ride that doesn’t sacrifice quality.
