New for 2015

For 2015, the CC gets two notable standard features - navigation and Car-Net connected services - as well as some minor styling changes.

Coupe, Meet Sedan

When is a sedan not a sedan? When it’s a coupe, of course!

The 2015 Volkswagen CC is VW’s entry into the burgeoning “four-door coupe” segment. It combines the profile and emphasis on style of a traditional coupe with the practicality of a four-door sedan, complete with full-size rear seats. If you’ve always wanted a stylish coupe, but need a sedan, this one is worth a look.

Powertrains and Performance

The 2015 Volkswagen CC’s available powertrains provide a sporty character that’s the perfect match to the car’s extroverted looks.

The CC features an award-winning 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 200 horsepower and 207 pound-feet of torque. This engine is offered only with front-wheel drive, and either a six-speed manual transmission or Volkswagen’s DSG dual-clutch six-speed automatic, which includes paddle shifters for manual control.

The manual model gets an EPA-rated 25 mpg combined (21 mpg city, 32 mpg highway)*, while the automatic gets the same 25 mpg combined rating, with 22 mpg city and 31 mpg highway*.

There’s also a 3.6-liter VR6 option. This engine type is unique to Volkswagen, and features cylinders arrayed in a “V” formation like a normal V6, but at a much narrower angle to save space. The CC’s VR6 produces 280 hp and 265 lb-ft of torque. It’s available only with a six-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission and Volkswagen’s 4Motion all-wheel drive.

The Tiptronic includes paddle shifters for a sportier feel, and the VR6’s considerable torque should get the car off the line quickly. The combination of VR6, Tiptronic, and 4Motion is also good for an EPA-rated 20 mpg combined (17 mpg city, 25 mpg highway)*.

Features and Trims

The 2015 Volkswagen CC is available only as a four-door, five-seat “coupe.” Volkswagen is following the trend of “four-door coupes” by marrying a low roofline with a four-door body. So while your eyes may say “sedan,” it’s best to think of the CC as a coupe with a particularly spacious back seat.

Most four-door coupes are mad by luxury brands, meaning you pay a high price for style. But with the cheapest of three available trim levels starting at $32,685**, the CC won’t break the bank.

The base model CC is the 2.0T Sport. It comes standard with bi-xenon headlights, LED daytime running lights, rain-sensing windshield wipers, automatic climate control, heated 12-way power front seats, a touchscreen navigation system, rearview camera, and Volkswagen’s Car-Net connected services.

The CC 2.0T R-Line builds on the standard features of the Sport, adding 18-inch alloy wheels, a more aggressive front bumper, side skirts, “R-Line” kick plates, and paddle shifters for the optional DSG automatic transmission.

Incorporating the applicable standard features from the Sport and R-Line is the CC 2.0T Executive. It includes ebony interior trim, leather seats, memory seating and mirrors, a power tinted glass sunroof, hands free trunk, keyless access with pushbutton start, and SiriusXM satellite radio with four-year subscription, plus a three-month trial for Sirius Travel Link.

The top CC model is the VR6 4Motion Executive, which adds the 3.6-liter VR6 engine, headlight washer system with heated nozzles, ventilated front seats with driver massage function, Park Distance Control, Dynaudio premium sound system, and a power rear sunshade.

Exterior/Interior

What really sets the 2015 Volkswagen CC apart is its styling. To create this four-door coupe, VW took a regular sedan platform and chopped the top to create something, long, low, and sleek. Like the similarly-sized Passat, the CC makes use of horizontal lines for a VW family look, but it’s much more emotional than that more mainstream model.

You may think that low roof would compromise interior space, but the CC is still quite comfortable, and fairly luxurious for a model wearing a mainstream badge. It comes standard with 12-way heated power seats, and a leather-wrapped three-spoke steering wheel like the ones you’ll find in any good sports sedan.

Unlike a traditional coupe, there’s also room for adults in back, and stuff in the trunk. There’s a useful 13.2 cubic feet of space in the way back, and the rear bench split folds 60/40 to accommodate longer items.

Safety

Standard safety equipment on the 2015 Volkswagen CC includes anti-lock brakes, stability and traction controls, front, front-side, and side-curtain airbags, and Volkswagen’s Intelligent Crash Response System. Park Distance Control with front and rear sensors is available as an option.

Bottom Line

The 2015 Volkswagen CC is a sensible sedan with the style of a more flamboyant coupe. That’s what a four-door coupe is all about.
