New for 2015

For 2015, the Beetle gets a new trim level called the Beetle Classic, while the optional 2.0-liter diesel engine gets a 10-horespower bump along with a slight increase to fuel economy.

A Blast from the Past

So you want a retro-styled car but with a host of modern amenities and comforts? Well, you’re in luck. The 2015 Volkswagen Beetle may be just what you’re looking for. Sporting an unmistakable design that’s heavily inspired by its classic 1960s relative, the latest Beetle is a true joy to look at—and it’s supremely fun to drive, too. Did we mention it comes as convertible?!

Powertrains and Performance

The 2015 Beetle has three engines to choose from, starting with a peppy 1.8-liter (1.8T) turbocharged four-cylinder that produces 170 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. A five-speed manual is standard and is sure to please purists, while a six-speed automatic is available for those happy to relinquish a little control. Each transmission provides excellent acceleration, with quick and precise shifting a trait shared by both.

The 1.8-liter Beetle is available as a coupe or convertible, however for that wind-in-your-hair experience, you’re only option is the six-speed automatic.

Next up is the Beetle R-Line, which sports a 2.0-liter four-cylinder under the hood. Total output is pegged at 210 horsepower and 207 pound-feet of torque. Here, we find a standard six-speed manual transmission, however, unlike the 1.8T, the R-Line can be optioned with a six-speed automated manual (DSG) transmission. Behaving a lot like your standard automatic, the DSG is more responsive and provides the convenience of an automatic with much of the performance and control of a manual.

Finally, we have the Beetle TDI. This particular model employs a turbocharged 2.0-liter diesel four-cylinder. It creates 150 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque. Once again, you have the choice between a six-speed manual and a six-speed DSG.

With its clever use of forced-induction engines (turbocharging) the entire Beetle lineup offers excellent fuel economy, but the standout by far is the TDI, which earns an EPA-estimated 34 mpg combined (31 city/41 highway).* This figure remains the same for both coupe and convertible models and regardless of transmission choice.

Features and Trims

With a dizzying array of trims and options, selecting a Beetle that meets your needs is easy. In addition to attractive starting MSRP of $20,695,* the 2015 Beetle is available in 1.8T, R-Line, and TDI trims.

Beetle 1.8T models come handsomely equipped with 17-inch alloy wheels, heated windshield-washer nozzles, heated mirrors, and full power accessories. Also standard is air-conditioning, cruise control, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, adjustable front seats, and premium vinyl upholstery.

The Beetle has been around for a long time, but that doesn’t preclude 2015 models from carrying the very latest technologies. Bluetooth® phone and audio connectivity, an eight-speaker sound system with CD player, and USB/iPod® interface provide owners with a healthy array of tech. Also standard is VW’s Car-Net telematics system.

For 2015, there’s also a sub-trim called the 1.8T Classic. It features unique upholstery, lumbar adjustments for the front seats, a touchscreen audio interface, satellite radio, and navigation.

The Beetle R-Line gets all of the 1.8T’s equipment (where applicable) and adds 18-inch wheels, foglights, a rear spoiler, and a sport-tuned suspension that further tightens the Beetle’s handling to help it shrug off bumps and bruises in the road. Sport seats compliment the new suspension, while a performance gauge package, faux carbon-fiber accents, and alloy pedals add to the R-Line’s sporty character.

Finally the clean-burning TDI includes all of the 1.8T’s standard equipment along with chrome exterior accents, keyless ignition/entry, dual-zone automatic climate control, a touchscreen audio interface, and much more.

Design

The Beetle has evolved over the years, but still retains that iconic (now retro) design of the past. While older models, and even as recently as the New Beetle, sported a far more flowery design (there was even a built-in vase in the dash!), the 2015 Beetle dispenses with the flower power for a beefier, sportier look.

Inside, the 2015 Beetle is spacious. Whether in convertible or coupe form, there is room for four, and seats are very comfortable, with enough support to ensure driver and passengers remain “groovy” even during longer trips.

Beyond that, the Beetle sports a clean cabin, with intuitive and easy-to-use controls. A center armrest makes long commutes more comfortable, while a plethora of storage bins happily accommodate keys, wallets, and mobile phones. There’s even an upper, secondary glove box that’s a clear throwback to old-school Beetle models.

Safety

You know what’s not groovy? Substandard safety. Thankfully, the 2015 Beetle dodges this hurdle with a comprehensive level of safety features. These include standard stability and traction control, antilock disc brakes, front side airbags, side curtain airbags, and Volkswagen’s own Car-Net telematics system.

Car-Net is especially useful. It bundles useful emergency services such as crash notification, roadside assistance, stolen vehicle location, remote door unlocking, and geo-fencing. Now that’s, like, totally far out.

Bottom Line

With an impressive array of powertrains and beefed-up retro styling, the 2015 Volkswagen Beetle combines form and function into one brilliant package. Whether as a coupe or a fun-and-sun-loving convertible, the Beetle is sure to put a smile on your face.
