New for 2015

Major additions for 2015 include a standard rearview camera across all trim levels, as well as an entirely new Persona Series trim level, which adds some cosmetics enhancements to the Prius Three trim.

Mr. Popular

The Toyota Prius is the most popular hybrid ever. And for good reason. In addition to outstanding fuel economy, the Prius is filled to brim with a wealth of standard features that complement a comfortable and spacious cabin. Yes, the Prius is ultra-efficient, but its frugal fuel economy often overshadows just how incredibly versatile Toyota's hybrid superstar truly is.

Powertrains and Performance

The 2015 Toyota Prius is powered by a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine that is mated to a pair of electric motors. Combined they send a total output of 134 horsepower for the front wheels via a specialized continuously variable transmission (CVT).

On the road, the Prius acquits itself very well. Acceleration is more than adequate for highway driving, where changing lanes and getting up to speed quickly is important.

Of course, the big draw for potential Prius owners is the car’s unbeatable fuel economy. EPA estimates award the 2015 Prius a very impressive 50 mpg combined (51 city/48 highway).* Who said it’s not easy being green?

Features and Trims

The 2015 Toyota Prius starts at $24,200** and is available in five trim levels: Two, Three, Persona Series, Four, and Five.

There’s a reason the Prius is the best-selling hybrid of all time. While most assume its popularity stems from outstanding fuel economy, the truth is the Prius offers so much value in addition to its fuel-sipping nature.

That value is evident thanks to the Prius’ long list of features. The Prius Two includes 15-inch alloy wheels, heated power mirrors, keyless entry/ignition, and a rearview camera, all as standard.  The Two trim also comes with cruise control, automatic climate control, an advanced trip computer, and a 60/40-split folding rear seat. Rounding out this extensive list of standard features is Bluetooth® phone and audio connectivity, a 6.1-inch touchscreen display, and a six-speaker sound system, complete with CD player and USB/iPod® interface.

The Prius Three adds (or replaces where applicable) an enhanced keyless entry system, a navigation system, voice controls, and Toyota’s Entune system. Entune is particularly handy as it provides real-time traffic information and the ability to use apps such as Pandora, iHeart Radio, and Open table when tethered via Bluetooth® to you smartphone.

Next up is the Persona Series, which adds 17-inch alloys, additional brightwork, side mirrors with integrated turn signals, and simulated leather upholstery.

The Prius Four Trim gets you the Three’s equipment but adds automatic headlights, an eight-way power driver seat, heated front seats, and an eight-speaker JBL sound system. While the Prius Five gets unique 17-inch alloys, foglights, and LED headlights.

Design

Rivals have tried mimicking its unique yet efficient design for years but there is no mistaking the 2015 Toyota Prius. The 5-door hatchback embraces the laws of physics with aerodynamic design that slices through air with rapier-like precision.

Inside, the Prius looks more spaceship than car. The dash swoops down into the center console, leaving an open storage area underneath. The Prius also affords occupants with plenty of other storage spaces, providing enough nooks and crannies for wallets, keys, purses, and all the other necessities of life.

Because of its hatchback design the 2015 Prius is also quite versatile. The second row features plenty of head, leg, and shoulder room, and you’ll enjoy considerably more cargo capacity than a typical midsize sedan.

Safety

The 2015 Prius comes standard with the Star Safety System™, a suite of six advanced safety features that includes enhanced Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Traction Control (TRAC), Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Brake Assist (BA), and Smart Stop Technology® (SST).

Optional on the Prius Four and Five is Toyota's Safety Connect emergency communications system, which includes emergency and roadside assistance, collision notification and stolen-vehicle location. The Prius Five is also eligible for the Advanced Technology package, which includes a frontal-collision warning system and a lane-departure warning system.

Bottom Line

If fuel efficiency is your primary concern, there are few vehicles that can go toe-to-toe with the 2015 Toyota Prius. But be warned: the Prius is no one-trick pony. With excellent standard and available features, a veritable treasure trove of tech, and a spacious interior, Toyota’s hybrid superstar is equipped to meet a wide range of needs.
