New for 2015
For 2015, the Scion xB adds to its tech repertoire with the inclusion of a standard backup camera, helping drivers stay frosty when reversing.
Box-o-Fun
The compact car segment is one of the most competitive, with plenty of good choices for the discerning buyer. Yet once in a while everyone gets the urge to stand out from the crowd, and the 2015 Scion xB lets you do just that.
The xB combines distinctive boxy styling with proven mechanicals from parent company Toyota, all at an affordable price. Sometimes, it really is hip to be square.
Powertrain and Performance
The sole engine option for the 2015 Scion xB is a 2.4-liter four-cylinder that produces 158 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque, and features Dual Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i) for added responsiveness.
The four-cylinder dries the front wheels through either a five-speed manual transmission or a four-speed automatic. Either transmission nets the same EPA-rated fuel economy of 24 mpg combined (22 mpg city, 28 mpg highway).*
Features and Trims
The 2015 Scion xB is only available as a five-door, five-seat hatchback with plenty of standard equipment. With a starting price of $17,120** with a manual transmission and $18,070** with an automatic, it won’t break the bank.
While a car at this end of the spectrum doesn’t come slathered in luxury, the list includes helpful features like a 60/40 split-folding rear seat, tilt/telescoping steering wheel with audio controls, and air conditioning. New for 2015, the Scion xB gets a handy backup camera as standard.
Technophiles will want to pay attention to the standard 6.1-inch LCD touchscreen display, which is paired with the Scion Display Audio System. The system features Bluetooth® hands-free calling and audio streaming, and HD Radio and USB connectivity.
Music is streamed, played, and broadcast through six speakers, and there’s a 160-watt Pioneer® AM/FM/CD head unit as well.
Unlike other brands, Scion doesn’t do option packages, preferring to sell cars with a fairly complete list of standard equipment and leave buyers to choose individual options.
Buyers can add additional connectivity as well as navigation with the optional BeSpoke Audio system. Features include push-to-talk voice-controlled navigation, points of interest, and Aha integration. Aha grants access to 100,000 audio stations, plus location-based services ©Yelp and TripAdvisor, and various social media apps.
In addition to the upgraded audio, there are a number of items to help personalize an xB, including different wheels and performance parts from Toyota Racing Development.
Exterior/Interior
Exterior styling is what really sets the 2015 Scion xB apart from other models in the competitive compact-car segment. Its squared-off styling gives the xB more presence on the road than one would expect of a car of its size. It’s highlighted by vertical reflectors at the front that mimic air intakes, and chrome exhaust tips at the back.
The boxy styling has a practical benefit, too. It makes for a surprisingly spacious interior which, combined with xB’s high driving position, might fool some drivers into thinking they’re in a larger crossover.
The rest of the interior is straightforward, with materials that appear high quality without being flashy, and controls placed right where they need to be. There are plenty of storage compartments, including a hidden compartment under the rear seats perfect for storing valuable items like laptops. Everything should be able to take the abuse of many years of hauling cargo and people.
Safety
The 2015 Scion xB’s list of standard safety equipment is just as comprehensive as everything else about the car. It’s equipped with six airbags, including driver and front passenger, front-seat mounted, and front and rear side curtain bags.
Also standard is the STAR Safety System, which bundles important features like anti-lock brakes, electronic brake-force distribution, traction and stability control and brake assist. There’s also a tire-press monitoring system, and a first-aid kit.
Bottom Line
There are plenty of competent compact sedans and hatchbacks out there, but for buyers looking for something a little funkier, the 2015 Scion xB is a good choice. Underneath the unorthodox styling, you’ll find a well-built small hatchback with plenty of standard equipment and a versatile interior, all for a relatively low price. Plus, you’ll never have to worry about losing it in a parking lot.
