New for 2015
The 2015 Scion FR-S gets a retuned suspension and automatic headlights are now standard. Scion has also made a few cosmetic chances such as new exhaust tips and updated interior trim. And in true Scion fashion, there is also a new limited-run Release Series 1.0 trim.
More of Everything
The FR-S hasn’t been around for very long. But despite the model's short time on earth, the track-inspired rear-wheel drive coupe from Scion has already earned a stellar reputation, thanks to its stylish good looks and race-inspired driving dynamics.
For the 2015 model year, Scion has upped the ante with a litany of styling enhancements to an already finely-tuned package.
Powertrains and Performance
The FR-S includes the world’s only flat boxer engine mounted in a front engine, rear-wheel drive configuration. This allows for an incredibly compact size and lower center of gravity. The four-cylinder is the result of a joint development between Toyota and Subaru. Performance enthusiasts will love the high 12.5:1 compression ratio that results in 200 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque.
The flat-four is mated to either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission. The manual transmission has short throws and the automatic contains steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters.
Furthermore, as difficult as it is to achieve, impressive fuel economy has been gained as well, with the six-speed manual returning an EPA-estimated 25 mpg combined (22 city/30 highway),* while the automatic nets 28 mpg combined (25 city/34 highway).*
Features and Trims
The 2015 Scion FR-S starts at $25,670* and comes with a bevy of standard equipment that includes 17-inch alloy wheels, automatic headlights, air-conditioning, full power accessories, a height-adjustable driver seat, a tilt-and-telescoping leather-wrapped steering wheel, cruise control, Bluetooth® phone and audio connectivity, and an eight-speaker sound system with a 6.1-inch touchscreen, complete with CD player, HD radio, an auxiliary audio jack and USB support.
The new Release Series 1.0 adds to all of that with exclusive yellow exterior paint, xenon headlights, an aerodynamic body kit, a performance exhaust, a lowered ride height, keyless ignition/entry and a unique steering wheel and shift knob.
The 2015 FR-S can also be had with a number of dealer-installed accessories such as fog lights, performance parts and a premium BeSpoke sound system with navigation, voice command, smartphone app integration, and Internet radio.
Exterior/Interior
The 2015 Scion FR-S’s profile is inspired by the Toyota 2000GT, with a sleek hood and roof-line that easily cuts through the air. The exterior includes a wide mouth and angular headlights, with a front fender that protrudes upward and a dual exhaust system in the back. The taillights are highlighted by LEDS for a modern, futuristic look.
The FR-S interior can seat up to four passengers (2 in front and 2 in back) with ease. The low-mounted front seats provide optimal comfort for the driver and front passenger, and the rear seat can fold completely flat to provide expanded storage space. A large center-mounted tachometer adds a sporty effect to the three-gauge panel and helps keep the driver informed of what’s really important. The panel includes both digital and analog gauges.
As is fitting for a car that looks so futuristic, the 2015 FR-S offers drivers their first experience of powerful new technology. The FR-S offers a connected infotainment audio system called BeSpoke. Utilizing Pioneer’s Zpyr™ technology, BeSpoke caters to driver’s needs with innovative features and access to a wide variety of personalized services.
Safety
The 2015 Scion FR-S was designed from the ground up to get you where you need to go with as much style and flair as possible. What is often overlooked, however, is its impressive arsenal of standard safety features. All 2015 FR-S vehicles come with six airbags, including driver and front passenger dual-stage advanced airbags, driver and front passenger seat-mounted side airbags, and front and rear passenger side curtain airbags.
The 2015 FR-S comes standard with the STAR Safety System™, which features an Anti-lock Brake System (ABS), Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD), Traction Control (TRAC), Brake Assist (BA), Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), and Smart Stop Technology (SST).
Bottom Line
Since its launch in 2013, the FR-S has been an undeniable hit, thanks to its athletic road manners and true sports car appeal. The 2015 model continues this trend by adding more of everything that has made the FR-S so special. Without question the 2015 FR-S is the best model to date and will have little trouble placing smiles on the faces of owners for miles on end.
