New for 2015
The 2015 Porsche Boxster adds some more smarts to its dashing good looks with the inclusion of a new rearview camera and parking sensors.
A Solution to the Mundane
Derided upon its introduction back in 1997 by “Porsche purists,” the Boxster has undoubtedly come a long way during its successful lifespan, proving critics wrong and earning an ardent fan base in the process.
Despite its position as the most affordable sports car in Porsche’s lineup, when it comes to pure ability and driving pleasure, the Boxster doesn’t cut any corners, unless, of course, you’re speaking of the ease at which it handles sharp turns. Without a doubt, the Boxster is every bit as capable as anything to come out of Porsche’s Baden-Württemberg headquarters.
While scholars and philosophers the world over ponder such poignant questions such as the nature of the universe and the meaning of life, we simply want to know how Porsche engineers continue to refine the brand’s reputation as one of the world’s premier sports car manufacturers. We may never learn their secret but in the 2015 Boxster, we at least get to enjoy the fruits of their labor.
Powertrains and Performance
Just as every iteration before it, the 2015 Porsche Boxster utilizes a midengine rear-wheel-drive layout. A six-speed manual transmission is standard while Porsche’s famous Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) automated seven-speed transmission is optional.
The base Boxster engine consists of a 2.7-liter horizontally opposed six-cylinder engine that generates 265 horsepower and 207 pound-feet of torque. Step up to the Boxster S and get a larger 3.4-liter flat-six that delivers 315 horsepower and 266 pound-feet of torque. Finally, the range-topping Boxster GTS gets an upgraded version of the S’ 3.4-liter that creates 330 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque.
The 2015 Boxster is a true sports car but it operates with impeccable German efficiency. Base models earn an EPA-estimated 24 mpg combined (20 city/30 highway) when mated to the six-speed manual, while base models outfitted with the PDK earn a remarkable 26 mpg combined (22 city/32 highway).*
Additionally, all Boxster models utilize a dynamic start-stop system designed to increase fuel economy when the vehicle is at a standstill. However, purists will be pleased to learn that this feature is fully defeatable.
Of course, what truly sets the Boxster apart is its stellar handling and road manners. The vehicle’s compact dimensions and quick reflexes make the 2015 Boxster the consummate sports car, while the symphonic din of the car’s engine would cause even Mozart to tap his feet in approval.
Trims and Features
The 2015 Porsche Boxster is a two-seat convertible model with a starting MSRP of $51,400. ** It’s offered in three trim levels (Base, S, and GTS) that correspond with engine size and standard features.
Base model standard features include 18-inch alloy wheels (with summer tires), a power-operated soft top with heated rear glass, and a James Bond-esque automatically extending rear spoiler. Interior highlights include partial leather upholstery, a seven-inch infotainment display, and four-speaker sound system, complete with CD player and auxiliary audio jack.
In addition to a more powerful engine, the Boxster S adds a number of upgrades over the base model, including 19-inch wheels, bi-xenon headlights, and an upgraded seven-speaker stereo. S models are also distinguishable by their larger front brakes and red-painted brake calipers.
Ascending the mountain to the top-tier Boxster GTS nabs buyers the most amount of standard content. Standout features on GTS models include a larger, more powerful engine, 20-inch wheels, tinted taillights, and upgraded exterior trim. The GTS’ exterior is further distinguishable by its unique front fascia.
In true Porsche fashion, the Boxster can be further customized via a number of packages. These include a Sport Chrono Package, complete with dynamic transmission mounts, launch control, driver adjustable chassis settings, and lap timer. A Convenience Package, which adds dual-zone climate control and heated seats. And an Infotainment package, which adds a navigation system, smartphone integration, and either a 10-speaker Bose audio system or an upgraded 12-speaker Burmester sound system.
Exterior/Interior
Whether running about town with its top down or more modestly covered up with its fabric roof, the 2015 Porsche Boxster looks good no matter what. From its sculpted side sills that direct air to the engine bay, to its jeweled headlights that dazzle and shine, the Boxster is a visual treat surpassed only by its stellar performance.
Inside, the Boxster is equally pleasing on the eyes, and handily services three of your four other senses. As you would expect, the cabin layout is simple yet elegant, with a concentrated focus on driver enjoyment. Indeed, all touch points, including the pedals and leather-trimmed steering wheel and shifter, are as purposeful as they are comfortable. Further refinement is found in the convertible top itself, which gets extra sound-deadening material
Finally, special praise is reserved for the Boxster's infotainment system. It’s controlled by a combination of fixed buttons and the vehicle’s touchscreen. While it may appear button-heavy at first, it's impressively easy to use.
Safety
Despite its thrill-seeking nature, the 2015 Boxster sports and impressive array of standard safety features, including antilock disc brakes, stability and traction control, head- and chest-protecting side airbags, and integrated rollover safety hoops above the headrests.
Optional safety equipment consist of a rearview camera and front and/or rear parking sensors. The optional adaptive cruise control also includes a frontal collision warning system that includes automatic braking for frontal collision mitigation.
Bottom Line
Many credit the Boxster for resurrecting the world’s love affair with the midengine convertible, and with the 2015 model it’s not hard to see why. While the latest Boxster doesn’t deviate from nameplate’s tried and tested formula, Porsche engineers have sprinkled in enough new ingredients to make this the best Boxster to date.
