New for 2015
The MINI Cooper Roadster returns for the 2015 model year sporting a few noteworthy additions. Automatic climate control and a rain sensor for the windshield wipers are now standard, while LED foglights with daytime running lights are available on the base Roadster and standard on S and JCW models.
Fun is Your Co-Pilot
The MINI Cooper Roadster is a sporty, two-seater version of the traditional four-seater MINI Cooper convertible. It features a lower stance, a more steeply raked windshield, and a more aggressive look than its fun-loving sibling.
The removal of the Roadster’s second row of seats places a greater emphasis on laser-sharp handling—all while maintain the invigorating road manners that have come to define the MINI brand.
Powertrains and Performance
The base Cooper Roadster is powered by a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 121 horsepower and 118 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed manual transmission is standard, while a six-speed automatic is optional.
The Roadster S employs a turbocharged 1.6-liter of the same engine that delivers 181 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque. Power is routed to the front wheels via a standard six-speed manual transmission, or through an optional six-speed automatic with paddle shifters. And while the six-speed manual fits the car’s personality, the optional automatic is just as good at delivering smooth and quick shifts without stifling acceleration.
Of course, out and out performance is central to the Roadster’s appeal and that’s evident in the Roadster S’ 0-60 mph sprint speed. MINI pegs it at 6.7 seconds when paired with the six-speed manual, with that number rising to 6.9 seconds with the automatic.
Finally, the John Cooper Works version represents the most powerful Roadster available. It utilizes the same turbocharged engine as the Roadster S but increases output to 208 horsepower and 192 pound-feet of torque.
It’s easy to think a car with the Roadster’s capability forgoes fuel efficiency for fun, but we’re happy to report that you’ll enjoy the best of both worlds. Base models equipped with the manual transmission earn an EPA-estimated 30 mpg combined (27 city/34 highway),* while the automatic earns slightly less.
Step up to the Roadster S and you can expect to earn 29 mpg combined (26 city/35 highway) with the manual,* and 28 mpg combined (25 city/34 highway) with the automatic.*
Despite the JCW Roadster’s enhanced performance, it earns the same fuel economy numbers as the S version.
As you’d expect from a MINI, handling and road manners are two key areas where the Roadster truly shines. Cornering is confidant, providing the right amount of feedback and reaction, while the car’s nimble frame helps keep things tight and planted in and out of bends.
We’ll refrain from describing the Roadster’s handling as “go-kart-like” since it’s become cliché at this point, but we will say that no other vehicle in this segment offers the same “honest” driving experience as the Roadster.
Drivers searching for a more robust experience can even opt for the available sport suspension, which firms up the suspension even further—but it’s not necessary to mine the most fun out the car, which is a testament to MINI’s performance credentials.
Features and Trims
The 2015 MINI Roadster starts at $26,100** and is available in Base, S, and John Cooper Works (JCW).
With a rather long list of standard features, the 2015 Roadster offers plenty of value. Highlights include 16-inch alloy wheels, premium vinyl upholstery, six-way manually adjustable seats, push-button ignition, automatic climate control, and color-adjustable ambient lighting. Bluetooth® phone and audio connectivity are all standard, as is a six-speaker sound system with CD player, HD radio, and USB/iPod® support.
The S Model gets all the Base model’s standard equipment (where applicable), adding a turbocharged engine, front foglights, a power-assist convertible top, hood scoop, and keyless entry. Additionally, an optional Sport package bundles 17-inch alloy wheels, xenon headlights, and hood stripes.
The JCW Roadster differentiates itself with an even more powerful turbocharged engine, a sport-tuned suspension, and 17-inch alloy wheels. It also packs dynamic traction control, front Brembo brakes, and an aerodynamic body kit.
Discerning drivers looking for even more features are welcome to explore MINI’s near limitless options and packages. Personalize your MINI even further with creatures comforts ranging from MINI Connected infotainment system, which interfaces with a number of popular apps from your smartphone, to a premium 10-speaker harmon/kardon® surround-sound system.
Design
The open-top Roadster is slung low to the ground with an elongated wheelbase that is heavy on style but light on body, sporting more attitude and athleticism than its Cooper cousin. S models are defined by a hood scoop air intake and distinct front fascia that features a blacked-out mesh grille. Other styling cues unique to S models include fog lamps and brake ducts.
Step inside the sporty two-seater and you immediately get a sense of speed and drama. The Roadster sports a large speedometer placed smack-dab in the center dash, while other MINI-centric flourishes like dials, switches, and gauges are sure to please fans and newcomers alike. Overall, the interior evokes the brand’s iconic racing heritage, providing the right mix of fun and livability drivers long for.
As a bonus, the Roadster actually sports a proper trunk, boasting 8.5 cubic feet of cargo space with top up or down.
Safety
Standard equipment in the 2015 Roadster includes antilock disc brakes, stability control, traction control, seat-mounted side airbags and rollover protection bars. And while the Roadster is already incredibly easy to park and maneuver, drivers can add available rear parking sensors for added convenience.
Bottom Line
If the thought of carving up canyon roads like a Thanksgiving turkey sounds appealing, then we highly recommend the 2015 MINI Cooper Roadster. Not only will you get a raucous open-top road-going experience, but MINI’s penchant for stellar handling and good old-fashioned fun is enough to tip the scales in this magical little MINI’s favor.
Simply put, the Roadster is a car that will continue to deliver grins even when nature eventually forces that top down.
