New for 2015

For 2015, the CX-9 gets a new Recreational Accessory Package that adds roof rails, cross bars, a cargo net, and stainless-steel rear bumper guard to Touring and Grand Touring models.

More Than Meets the Eye

At surface level we all know Mazda is in the business of making cars. Yet, somehow the Japanese automaker manages to provide so much more than a viable way of getting from point A to point B. Case in point: the 2015 CX-9.

As the largest model in Mazda’s lineup the CX-9 does what any good crossover should by marrying the smooth handling of a sedan with all the utility and flexibility of a larger SUV. With room for seven and the perfect level of visual flair, the CX-9 is one compelling crossover. But the magic doesn’t stop there. Like so many Mazda models before it, the CX-9 is designed from the ground up to be fun to drive. It’s an inherent quality – a ‘Mazda-ness’ if you will – that’s instilled in every vehicle.

Powertrains and Performance

The 2015 Mazda CX-9 is motivated by a 3.7-liter V6 engine that generates a hearty 273 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque. Power can be sent to either the front wheels or all four wheels via a standard six-speed automatic transmission with dynamic manual shift control.

As is so often the case with Mazda vehicles, the CX-9 tackles the open road with aplomb thanks to silky smooth acceleration and energetic, responsive handling. Whether you’re driving around town or looking to get up to highway speeds, this is one multitalented crossover SUV.

Speaking of highway driving, when it’s time to calm things down a little, the CX-9 knows the score. Sure, the CX-9 can tackle the turns without breaking a sweat, but it’s also an accomplished highway cruiser that keeps wind and road noise to a minimum.

The CX-9’s suspension is another high-note in the vehicle’s extensive repertoire. Road imperfections are made short work of, which helps keeps things nice and tight on less forgiving surfaces. And we have no doubt that both drivers and passengers will appreciate the CX-9’s soft and supple ride, especially during longer trips.

Fuel economy isn’t often touted in vehicle’s this size, but regardless of whether you select FWD or need the added stability of AWD, the CX-9 isn’t your typical gas guzzling SUV. FWD models earn an EPA-estimated 19 mpg combined (17 city/24 highway),* while AWD models suffer a slight penalty returning 18 mpg combined (16 city/22 highway).*

Features and Trims

The 2015 Mazda CX-9 starts at $29,985** and is available in Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring trims.

Sport models come handsomely equipped with a number of standard features potential customers will appreciate, such as 18-inch alloy wheels, full power accessories, and a roof spoiler. Other standard highlights include a tilt-and-telescoping leather-wrapped steering wheel, 5.8-inch touchscreen, and Bluetooth® hands-free and audio streaming capability, which compliments nicely the CX-9’s six-speaker audio system.

Touring models add blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, a rearview camera and leather upholstery with heated power front seats. While Grand Touring models spice things up further, adding three-position-memory to the driver's seat, automatic bi-xenon headlights, power tailgate, rain-sensing wipers, auto-dimming rearview mirror, and sporty 20-inch wheels.

CX-9 shoppers are welcome to outfit their vehicle further with a number of optional packages and add-ons. Touring and Grand Touring models can be equipped with a navigation system and 10-speaker Bose® premium audio system.

Looking to keep passengers in the second and third row entertained? The CX-9 has you covered. Grand Touring models can add a rear-seat entertainment system that includes a DVD player and nine-inch screen.

Exterior/Interior

Any automotive designer worth their salt will tell you that it’s not enough for a car to captivate the first time you lay eyes upon it. No, a good design will prove equally compelling years down the road. All the best designs get better with age, and the same can be said of the 2015 Mazda CX-9.

Indeed, the 2015 CX-9 embodies the principal of good design. It’s a stylish looking crossover that doesn’t fall victim to the pitfalls so often associated with crossover SUVs; namely, overwrought design and redundant themes.

The CX-9’s interior is equally pleasing. Highlights include a smart yet stylish layout that is user-friendly and driver focused. The first two seating rows provide ample room. Likewise, the third row, often bereft of comfort and space, is rife with leg, shoulder, and headroom. It’s also incredibly easy to get to, which is rarity in other three-row SUVs.

Meanwhile, the CX-9 offers an impressive amount of cargo carrying capability. With its second and third rows folded flat, owners are welcome to 101 cubic feet worth of cargo space.

Safety

Safety is a longstanding pillar of Mazda design. The 2015 CX-9 employs standard antilock disc brakes, stability control with a rollover sensor, front-seat side airbags, full-length side curtain airbags, and active head restraints.

Additional safety features can be had in Touring and Grand Touring models, which add a suite of electronic driving aids that include a blind-spot monitor, rear parking sensors, a rear cross-traffic alert system, and a rearview camera.

Bottom Line

The 2015 Mazda CX-9 is a flexible crossover, providing enough comfort and room for seven passengers. It’s remarkably stylish, too, looking good in motion and at a standstill. And finally, it’s actually fun to drive, providing owners with the type of fun driving dynamics often missing in the crossover SUV segment.
