New for 2015

The 2015 Mazda CX-5 is primarily a carryover from 2014, with the exception of new standard keyless entry and ignition to the Touring and Grand Touring trims.

One Size Fits All

The Mazda CX-5 hasn’t been around as long as some of its competitors but that hasn’t stopped it from establishing quite the name for itself. Not only is that a testament of Mazda’s ability as a brand and automaker, but the appeal of the CX-5 itself is undeniable. As a compact crossover, the CX-5 was built from the ground up to meet the needs of a diverse set of lifestyles, and that level of versatility and quality has really caught on with drivers.

Want outstanding fuel economy? The CX-5 has got you covered thanks to Mazda’s advanced suit of SKYACTIV® technology. Need seating for up to five? You got it. What about advance safety features and solid value? But of course. How about that signature Mazda style and performance? Yes and Yes!

Powertrains and Performance

Potent and poised, the 2015 Mazda CX-5 features a standard 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that creates 155 horsepower and 150 pound-feet of torque. Power is sent to the front wheels via a six-speed manual transmission; however drivers looking to hand over shifting duty can select an available six-speed automatic.

The CX-5 is also available with all-wheel drive. These models deliver even more confidence thanks to an upgraded mill that generates 184 horsepower and 185 pound-feet of torque. For AWD models, Mazda has replaced the standard six-speed manual with a six-speed automatic.

Of course, enthusiast will always prefer manual transmissions over automatics, but the CX-5’s automatic is as peppy as they come. It’s a finely-tuned gear ratios prove incredibly responsive when called into action and provide quick and smooth down/upshifts.

The CX-5 has a lot of factors working in its favor but what truly sets it apart from the competition is Mazda’s full range of SKYACTIV® technology. Much more than silly marketing jargon, SKYACTIV® directly impacts the CX-5’s handling and fuel economy thanks to combination of advanced aerodynamics, lightweight materials, and advanced engine technology.

As a result, the CX-5 sports some truly remarkable fuel economy numbers. How remarkable? Well, we’re glad you asked! FWD 2.0-liter models return an EPA-estimated 35 mpg on the highway when mated to the six-speed manual,* while AWD models return 31 mpg on the highway when configured with the six-speed automatic.**

Features and Trims

The 2015 Mazda CX-5 is available in Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring trims levels.

Entry-level sport models start at $21,545*** and represents incredible value thanks to veritable treasure trove of standard features. Sport models come equipped with 17-inch wheels, full power accessories, and cruise control. A 60/40 split-folding rear seat is also standard, as is a four-speaker sound system, complete with CD player, AUX jack, and USB/iPod® ports that lets users plug in a personal media device.

Stepping up to Touring trim gets CX-5 owners all the content from the Sport model (where applicable) plus a more powerful 2.5-liter engine, keyless ignition/entry, a rearview camera, and a blind-spot monitoring system. There’s also an ultra-convenient six-way power drive seat and upgraded six-speaker sound system. Not to be overlooked, the Touring also sports upgraded cloth upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and Bluetooth® Audio Package (optional for the Sport model) that tosses in a touchscreen interface, automatic crash notification, audio system voice controls, and much more.

Finally, top trim Grand Touring models add even more goodies to the pile with the inclusion of 19-inch wheels, automatic headlights, automatic windshield wipers, heated mirrors, dual-zone climate control, heated front seats, and leather upholstery.

Drivers looking to configure their CX-5’s even further can also select from a number of packages, including a Technology Package and a Moonroof and Bose® Audio package, which as its name suggests adds a moonroof and upgraded nine-speaker Bose® audio system.

Exterior/Interior

The 2015 CX-5 oozes confidence and exhibits a swagger that would turn the head of even the most loyal car owner. And really, who could blame them? As the first vehicle to embody Mazda’s “Kodo— Soul of Motion” styling philosophy, the CX-5 is an example of form and function combining into one synergistic compilation of dynamism and design.

Consumer or luxury, few cars are able to embody the sporty spirit of the CX-5 while at the same time incorporating such elegant and muscular curves. And while one could try and pinpoint the CX-5’s appeal by pointing to its evocative curvature, it’s rear roof spoiler, or its standard dual exhaust curves, we’re content with simply enjoying this automotive artwork from near or afar.

Step inside and the 2015 CX-5 is equally stunning. The overall design is attractive while maintaining a modern and driver-oriented focus. Instrumentation is engaging while driver’s controls are easily accessible and intuitive to use. Material quality is exceptionally high, too, with plenty of soft-touch surfaces and warm inviting features.

For a compact crossover, the CX-5 is also very roomy. It seats five and provides owners with 34.1cubic feet of cargo space, which is plenty big for groceries, suitcases, or whatever else you may need to fill it with. As crossover SUVs go, the CX-5 is versatile and always ready to handle whatever task you throw its way.

Safety

Every 2015 Mazda CX-5 comes standard with antilock brakes, stability and traction control, front side airbags and side curtain airbags. An automatic crash notification feature is optional on the Sport and standard on the Touring and Grand Touring, which also get a blind-spot warning system.

Optional on Touring and Grand Touring models is Mazda’s Smart City Brake Support system, which uses a laser sensor to detect objects directly in front of the vehicle at speeds of up to 19 mph. If the driver fails to respond to a warning, the CX-5 can automatically apply the brakes.

Bottom Line

We’ve all heard the term “one size fits all” and rolled our eyes at the exaggerated nature of the term, but with the 2015 Mazda CX-5, we have a model that virtually fits any lifestyle. It’s powerful, it’s poised, it’s fuel-efficient, and it’s incredibly versatile. It’s also packing a bevy of tech and creature comforts that will surely keep owners and occupants happy no matter where the road takes them.
