New for 2015

Significant changes for 2015 include a new InControl infotainment system and additional color and wheel options.

Climb Every Mountain

There are many luxury cars that can get their occupants from the mansion to the country club in unbelievable comfort, but how many can do that without setting a tire to pavement? The Land Rover Range Rover was one of the original luxury SUVs, and it’s still one of the best in terms of both upscale features and off-road prowess.

Powertrains and Performance

Whether you choose the V6 or V8 option, the 2015 Range Rover has enough power to handle the conditions anywhere you might choose to rove.

First there’s the 3.0-liter supercharged V6, which produces 340 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque. All Range Rover models are offered solely with an eight-speed automatic transmission and, naturally, four-wheel drive.

While the Range Rover is, to say the least, a burly vehicle, the V6 will push it from 0 to 60 mph in 7.1 seconds, and on to a top speed of 130 mph. The EPA rates fuel economy at 19 mpg combined (17 mpg city, 23 mpg highway).*

Buyers can also opt for the 5.0-liter supercharged V8, which produces a mighty 510 horsepower and 461 pound-feet of torque. That gets the Range Rover from 0 to 60 mph in 5.1 seconds and on to a top speed of 140 mph, or 155 mph with the optional 22-inch wheels. Fuel economy is rated at 16 mpg combined (14 mpg city, 19 mpg highway).*

The Range Rover is about more than on-road performance, though. Like all Land Rovers, it’s built to thrive where the pavement ends, and a host of electronic features can make anybody look like an off-roading pro.

Land Rover’s Terrain Response system adjusts different vehicle parameters depending on conditions, while Roll Stability Control and Hill Descent Control help keep the Range Rover right-side up.

Features and Trims

The 2015 Land Rover Range Rover is a full-size five-door, five-seat SUV. It’s available in both standard and long-wheelbase configurations and four trim levels, with prices starting at $83,495.**

For that price, it’s not surprising that even the base Range Rover comes with as much standard equipment as a luxury sedan. Highlights include 19-inch alloy wheels, leather seats, a rearview camera, 13-speaker Meridian audio system, Xenon automatic headlights with LED signature, Terrain Response, and a power tailgate.

The next model in the Range Rover hierarchy is the HSE, which builds on the base model by incorporating its standard features and adding a panoramic roof, soft door closing, 14-way power adjustment for the front seats, front and rear headrests with 4-way tilt, and auto-dimming power-folding exterior mirrors.

Incorporating the applicable standard features from those models and adding the 5.0-liter V8 is the Supercharged model. It also includes the more sophisticated Terrain Response 2 Auto system, front fog lamps, stainless steel pedals, and Dynamic Response driver assistance system.

The top Range Rover model is the Autobiography. The most luxurious vehicle this side of a Rolls-Royce, it includes everything from the other models and adds a Meridian Signature Reference 29-speaker audio system, four-zone climate control, rear-seat entertainment system, power-adjustable rear seats, and a host of electronic systems.

Land Rover also offers plenty of personalization options, including a generous color palette and multiple wheel designs.

Exterior/Interior

The Range Rover’s chiseled exterior styling has persistently evolved since the first model debuted in 1970, yielding the stylish SUV available today. Classic features like the blocky profile and split-folding tailgate remain, and are accentuated by a contrasting piece of trim that begins in the side gills and LED accent lighting.

While the Range Rover is built for the mud, the interior is built for Park Avenue. It would actually be a shame to get all of that nicely-crafted leather and wood dirty. Unlike a more traditional luxury vehicle, all of the switchgear is also big and chunky, making everything easy to operate.

On the technology front, the Range Rover is available with Land Rover’s new InControl infotainment system and an eight-inch display screen. The system includes an app suite for smartphone connectivity.

Safety

Standard safety equipment on the 2015 Land Rover Range Rover includes anti-lock brakes, stability and traction controls, and front, front-seat mounted, side, thorax, and pelvis airbags.

In addition, there’s a long list of available electronic driver aids, including a surround camera system, park assist with Perpendicular and Parallel Park, Park Exit, and 360 Park Distance Control features, blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, and Intelligent Emergency Braking.

Bottom Line

The 2015 Land Rover Range Rover is a luxury car that can go places most luxury cars can’t.
